Default How do these work?

Ok, Ive seen on SOHC engine like a stock stang GT and V6 where the rocker arms are on the heads and with the springs below them and the rods connected to the rocker arms...but I want to know where the other end of the rods go or connect too? And also what do they do? What are they there for? Please explain in lamens terms...lol. Thanks.

There are no pushrods in a Single OverHead Cam(SOHC)=4.6 engine. There are lifters,or lash adjusters, though. In an OverHead Valve(OHV)=5.0 engine the pushrods go down through the head to the lifters that ride on the cam lobes themselves. The cam is in the valley between the cylinder banks and under the intake manifold. The SOHC engine has a camshaft for each head. This cam rides directly on the rocker arm and opens the valve by pushing down on the rocker arm. This causes the valve to open.Valve lash,or clearance,is maintained by an oil pressurized cylinder called a lifter. There is a piston inside the lifter that keeps the rocker in contact with the camshaft. The lifter is on one side of the camshaft and the valve is on the other.

DOHC would have two cams per head. SOHC has one per head.

People call them all kinds of things, like, push rod motors, cam in block etc. there really is not a need for a special name, single cam motors are the oldest style engine around. That does not mean however that they a obsolite technolgy, the most powerfull engines in the world are single cam engines (NHRA Top Fuel), and plenty of street cars, make alot of power with them.

Your car is a pushrod motor. 96 and up 4.6 GT's had either a SOHC in the GT or a DOHC in the Cobras. 95 and older 5.0's were pushrod.

It's called a push rod engine or OHV engine.

Over
Head
Valve

Or a 4 banger, or straight 6
