Stick with the original sizes, thats what theyre made for - no cutting. The exception is subs, cause you have to find a place for them. Its more important to match up your components and wattages, than it is to try and go alot bigger. I have two Alpine V12 amps, but they are not huge, yet because they are pushing exactly what the speaker calls for they sound great. (Youre better off putting 35w into a 40w speaker than putting 100w into a 300w.)
I have to take some issue with this. It is never a bad idea to run an amp that has slightly more power than speaker specifications. If you purchase an amp that is RMS rated at 2x200 and subs that can handle 2x200, you will be runnin your amp at 100% to satisfy the speaker. Get an amp that has maybe 75-100 watts extra left in it and just turn it down slightly. Depenent on other factors, your amp will be much happier, and will probably sound better as well.

But youre still putting the same wattage into the speaker like I said, its the same thing with some amp preservation. What I was getting at was, you see kids all the time sticking huge 500W speakers in their cars off their stock system and it sounds like crap. If they had matched the components better, even with smaller watt speakers it would sound better.

i am going to try and fit my 2 12"s in the trunk of my convertible..... with that said you can see i dont care much for available trunk space... i have them in a box now and it would fit into the trunk but the only problem is it is too tall and the trunk wont close.... anyone know of any sites or stores that sells boxes made for convertible mustangs... i really dont feel like playing carpenter and making my own box at this point
Depending on the speakers, the box probably has to have a certain volume. So lets say you do make your own, smaller box - it probably wouldnt work so well. You might want to try using just one in a smaller box or even get a couple smaller ones, even though I understand you want to use what you have already.

MB Quart(I think that's the name) makes great speakers. They were the best sounding i've heard so far.
