Default Overflow tank question

I've mounted and hooked up the overflow coolant tank but my question is, doesn't this serve the purpose to catch the coolant that overflows from the radiator? If so, why is it air tight? The whole purpose of the overflow is to allow it to spill over incase of pressure, well if there is no breather then how will it work? It will just blow the hose right off ...

an overflow tank should not be air tight, an overflow setup will catch and return the coolant to the radiator as it expands and contracts due to changes in temperature. it does this by filling /sucking the coolant from the bottom of a open to atmosphere holding tank.

So I probably have it setup wrong. On the bottom I have a valve though, what's the point of that if it needs to always be open to allow coolant to come through?

One side has a shutoff valve that connects to a hose and the other just has an elbow connection for a hose but no valve..

Here is what I have. It's a typical overflow tank. How would you run it..

ok i see now, i would put the hose from the radiator into the fitting without the valve and face that end down, i would then get another fitting without a valve and install it on top and use a piece of hose to make a vent, possibly using some sort of screen or rattle cap. you could retain the valve, but it serves no purpose and if closed accidentally could cause problems as the radiator would then have no expansion release.

Wouldn't the shutoff valve perhaps make it easier when you need to reuse the antifreeze ? You can shut it off from the bottom when removing not to spill any coolant. ??

i suppose, but when the cooling system cools off it will suck the overflow coolant back into the radiator, always keeping it full to the top, the catch can setup u have would be set up as a catch for the vent on a degas bottle or overflow setup like the one i explained. and is only used to prevent spills at the track in my experience
