Default Trans ? on 97 Cobra

Hi all, I just bought a 97 Cobra is runs great and shifts good other then If i put the car in second gear and let my hand off of the stick it pops in neutral. Is this a normal thing. All other gears seem to be fine. It will stay in gear if i hold it down in second until i let the clutch out then it is fine. Please let me know if anybody has a idea. Thanks

That's very far from normal... that sort of thing will never be normal in a street car because it is an extreme safety hazard... I can't even think of anywhere where that type of thing would make sense.

Does it have an aftermarket shifter? Does it do this in 4th as well?

If you have an aftermarket shifter, the stop point may be set bad... if it is still the stocker, your transmission may be messed up... bent linkage maybe.

It is a Steeda Tri-Axe Shifter i think. I know it is not the stock shifter. Just not for sure if it's the Steeda.

Then it is most likely the adjustments on the shifter. Check it out and see for sure.

Ok i took the car to the Trans Shop. They told me that the Trans is in great working order. There is no Foam padding between the shift and trans that is why there is so much noise. The guy told me that he had a 97 cobra about 5 years back he said with the aftermarket shifter installed it will sometimes be hard to get it into gear. I am just used to the 5-speed in the neon i guess.
