Default 1970 Mustang Hard Brake Pedal Issue

I have a 1970 Mustang Convertible, 302, 3 speed which has a hard brake pedal issue. The brakes stop the car, but you almost have to stand on them. The brakes are non-power with drums all around. I have changed the master cylinder and bled the system with a power bleeder until clean fluid with no bubbles came out at each wheel cylinder. The car had been sitting for a while until I could get to it. Anything else I can check? Thanks.

If you haven't driven a car with manual brakes in awhile, it can be quite scary lol.

I don't know how bad they are on your car, but they always take ALOT more pressure than power brakes. How long have you owned the car and did this just start ?

Default 1970 Mustang Hard Brake Pedal Issue

I've had the car since the late 1980's. The brakes were really good for non-power brakes. Then I started having issues. I had a local shop work on the brakes about 4 years ago. They "claimed" they rebuilt the master cylinder. I think they just changed the front brake lines and maybe a wheel cylinder, or two. After their work, the brakes would barely stop the car (but that was an improvement). I've finally gotten around to changing the master cylinder. I've barely driven the car for the last four years, or so. It is parked under a car port.

Brake fluid absorbs moisture. There are lots of cast parts in the brake system. I bet you have had a buildup of rust in the cylinders.

+1 ^^^

Not driving a car is one of the worst things for them. Especially if it's outside, carport or not. Brake parts rust up rather quickly. If your not comfortable doing the work yourself, I'd suggest taking it back in for another brake overhaul. Then I'd find a place to store it inside if not being driven for awhile. Good luck
