We removed the rear seat on my son's 2014 and found (among other things) these two round black items with what looks to be electrical harnesses running to them. I'm stumped; can someone please let me know what they are?

Those are the covers over the fuel pump attachment, That's why you have wires running to/through them.

The Mustang has a saddle tank, one side has the pump and the other is a syphon pump.
