Default motor mounts

I was told today that I need to replace my motor mounts. How long can you go before you start having problems with the car? Can bad motor mounts cause a vibration in the car?

the best way to tell is to look at them. there are only 2 motor mounts and 1 trans mount. the motor mounts are on each side of the motor, right dead center. the stock ones are rubber and are dead if the rubber is cracked pretty bad. when you hit the throttle, the motor should torque some to the passenger side. watch the drivers side motor mount as you hit the gas. if it pulls apart too much, its shot. and ya, it will make the car shake more if its gone.

I had a friend of mine looking at my car today and he had noticed that the motor was sitting a little lower than his car. So he started looking around and said that motor mounts were shot and needed to get replaced. He got in the car and jamed on the gas and I didn't notice any movement of the motor that I thought was out of the ordinary. He said that was some of the vibration that I have been feeling lately because the motor is moving and sending it down the drive shaft to the back of the car. I'm not sure if all that is true but he hasn't lead me wrong, even if he's a chevy driver.

if you didnt know any obscure motor shake, id take off the drive shaft and check them u-joints. mine went and it made a crazy shake. check them. but look real close at the mounts. if they are shot, there will be huge cracks in the rubber. have him show you where they are. they are right on the side of the motor, below the headers, right dead center, front-to-back. check em. then rev the motor and watch the mounts, not the motor. if the drivers side mount opens and shows the bad cracks, they are gone.

Yeah I looked at the motor mounts when he told me that they were shot. They looked pretty bad. We went to Auto zone and looked at new ones and boy the difference in the two. I did notice that then I put my transmount back in and lowered the trans it went down alot. When I bought this car ( 6 months ago) the guy that I bought it from told me that alot of the stuff on the car was original. I have started putting alot of things in that I think that should have been along time ago. the list at the bottom are some of the things that I have done. Next is the shocks and brakes, rotors, and wheel bearing. After the begain of the year I'm going to put new control arms. Right now I'm saving up for a 327. Thanks for the input.

check the u-joints for the hell of it too. mine went, but i have an 83 and i have original mounts, so i dont know.i have original front struts and trans mount, and all the original bushings. check the joints though. you may want to put in the mounts just in case.

I put in a new driveshaft today and most of my vibration went away. I do need to replace my motor mounts. I also put new headers in today. Boy did these fit like a glove. The old ones sucked a@@. I will never again buy single flange. I now have some bbk's shorties. I love them. I have to get one more heat cycle in before I check all my bolts.

Right now I'm not going to get any urethane mounts because I want to wait until I get my new motor. So for right now I'm just going to the local parts store and get some stock mounts. While installing my new driveshaft I noticed that the alumium one is a lot bigger than the stock steel one. I didn't think that I was going to get the bolts in because the muffler was pushing against the driveshaft I finally got it in. I know "that's what she said". I hope to have the mounts in this weekend or the end of next. Do you think that the bad motor mounts will cause something else to go bad if I don't do it right way?
