As suggested, Advance Auto and Auto Zone will loan you the scanner. All 96?and newer cars require the OBD II connector to be a common type and in the same place. Yours is located on the left side of the transmission hump, just behind the center console. If you use a flashlight you can see the standard hookup (looks like a computer plug - which it is) sitting there. You plug the scanner in and then turn the engine to run, but do not start it. It reads the codes and then you give the scanner back to the store. They will print out the codes. I have seen that in most cases the "check engine" light gives codes for the O2 sensor. In my 97 3.8, there are four of them, one in front and one in back of the cat. Your scan should tell you which one is faulty. The pre-cat O2 sensors are a PITA to get to and require a special tool.
I doubt that plugs and wires will affect the "check engine" light. The Haynes manual is ok for telling you basic things like this.

i had the same problem. 00 v6 almost at 60k miles light came on. upstream o2 sensor. got it cleared from computer, came back in 3 days later. oh well. is it possible to pull the bulb or something? i'm not spending 100+ on that o2 sensor.

Not to mention you'll waste more gas without properly functioning O2 sensors on a non-modified car.

This is frustrating as hell to me right now... maybe I'm in a bad mood or something. You come here asking for help and people tell you how to do it the right way and you don't want to spend money, and you come back and post without going to AutoZone like everyone tells you to get the code scanned. It may not even be the O2 sensor... yet you're going to assume. Way to go.
For the third time, go get the code scanned at an AutoZone, they will tell you what the code said and that will tell you the problem part that then needs to be replaced.

I had the same problem in an f150 pick up with the 4.6. I jacked around for days checking in on a meter, replaced one sensor that was not the right one. I finally gave up and for 90.00 the ford dealership fixed it. This truck ran like crap and my mileage sucked. There is a time to bite the bullet and take it to a ford dealership. I am lucky, a really good friends of mine owns one, and he does take care of me on the bill. I called around to get prices on putting in my gears. He was 200.00 cheaper. The point is these guys work on fords everyday and sometimes ya gotta use them.
