Default Crate Engine Temp Questio

Ok I have a 1970 Mustang. I put a 302 Crate motor(the one in the Ford Racing Catalog) in it. Its the Alum. Head 340hp one. Anyway I live in Arizona and during the summer it gets pretty hot out here. I bought the best Griffin Alum Radiator, and the best Water pump as well. What should the Normal Temp. be for the engine. It moves around so much from 170 to 210. If I leave the car sitting just running it will get and stay at 210. Is that too hot for the engine??? I've been trying to figure this out for a year now and I need help. </P>

*Note* I've also tried changing out the thermostats. I had a 180 opening and the car got to 210 faster. Right now there is a 160 in it.</P>

well a electric fan will help if you using a flex fan and a pusher fan with a "hi flow" 170 stat and maybe lower your timimg just a bit you should be ok..also going to a syth. oil will lower your temps..is this and auto.? if so a hugh trans cooler will help...an oil cooler will help by reducing the oil temp 20 degrees..also check your hoses if some age they may be collasping

Never heard of a pusher fan?? I'm using a flex fan. I was going to go electric but I didn't want to deal with more electronics in the car. I have the hi flow 165 stat in it right now. And its a Auto.I think the Oil cooler and syth is a good idea(I'll probably get that depending on how the install is). But I alsowant to know what is my "safe" temp range with this type of engine?</P>

170-210 is great engine temps, especially in good ol' Scottsdale AZ. I've been out there in mid summer and that place is hot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i'd say 180-185 you sure it's a high flow..is the ofice bigger than a stock one it wil be 1/8" bigger...a hi flow is suposed to be fully open @ 165 not like a stock one that starts to open say 165 being a 165..the pusher fan goes on the other side of the rad..I would set it at 200 degrees where do you have your sending unit for the temp gauge? head or intake..also is it a mechanicial one? if not you need to get one! I would be the oil cooler down low on the rad it can plug into the oil sending unit..one thing I might had overlooking it you may want to rich'in up the car just a lil bit..is this thing have a carb or injected? also a deep sump transmission pan will fight the heat in the trans..a gauge on the trans would be a good idea<edited><editID>vfast</editID><editDate>38004.0081365741</editDate></edited>

At the most 210.But yours sounds about right. As long as you dont have detonation or any wierd sounds and it never exceeds 210 you are ok.The temps can actually get much higher without damage but 210 is everyones cut off point.Check around about pressurized cooling systems and how they work and that will better help explain to you.

Yea its a hi flow. Its bigger then stock. My Temp gauge is on the intake, and its a electric. The only problem I see with the oil cooler is the hook up to the engine. I have crap for room on the left side for any hoses and the hook up. Its also carb. You have any links for a cheap pusher fan and oil cooler?</P>

ok..first get a mechaicial gauge they are more precise..e-bay is the place for fans and oil cooler...I would put the line along the frame with a lil slack for engine movement you can tack a clip holder on the frame for a nice neat install

Default RE: Crate Engine Temp Questio

im going through the same thing. im here in mohave valley, az. temps are 120. i installed a 4 row last dec. and now thats it hot its running 200 and at a light it will get to 210-220. i tried the spal 2300 cfm, what a joke and waste of money. a local shop said i should of installed a 3 row, thats what i had for years without any problems, until it finally got clogged up, figured a 4 row would be better. the shop said by the time the air gets to the back core its doing nothing.
