Default Teflon Coating:

Ive got a question about this and I cant find information worth a damn on it. Anyways, I have a friend from work who is building up a 40 plymouth coupe. He already has about 15k invested in the car... he's having to get everything custom made or custom fabricated so its a loooooong ways before he gets it done... He mentioned that he was really thinking about getting his pistons teflon coated. He found a company that does it..
My questions:
What would be the benefit of it? Would it actualy help or would it be pretty much pointless, especally if he has no plans to spray it?
Would have have to get your pistons rebalanced afterwards?
Would this actualy improve wear and tear on your cylander walls? It seems that would be the only point to me of putting a non stick coating on it..

Not sure if this should be here or in off topic, but its a pretty general tech question that could apply to pretty much any engine.

Well LS1 F-Bodies had teflon on the piston skirts, but that was to help save the sleeves during cold engine piston slap.

Hm, i'm pretty sure that teflon coating wouldn't do much, might help with dry starts or as cody said cold starts. Teflon coating really isn't that durable of a coating... which is why you can't use a metal spatula on a teflon pan. It's not that heat resistant either... i think it starts to break down around 400-500 degrees-ish, unless they have different formulas for engines.

Either way, you would only gain an extra 1 to 5 horsepower from it at most, which is less 'horsepower' than he could gain from switching to ceramic wheel bearings (i don't know if they make them for cars... but on motorcycles, they made up about a 5 hp gain on one wheel)

Unless he plans on running it 100k+ miles... he shouldn't really worry about the wear on the cylinders.

The coating he is talking about is not really teflon but it is similar. You can get the skirts coated and the tops as well and it does help with friction at all times I would say about 5-8 hp at the wheels. And cody LS1's do not have coated skirts, I can take a pic of any one of the stock LS1 pistons I have laying around and prove this.

JD1969, The updated GM pistons had a teflon/nylon patch on the skirt.

It wasn't even specific to LS1's either. You should know this if you own a GM Gen III or newer V8.

Since it appears that you don't go to any site related to piston slap and it will show you not only pictures but TSB's talking about coated skirts.

Ok there cody, I am well aware of the infamous piston slap, your post was saying that LS1 f bodies had coated piston when in fact they do not. A fix from a TSB is not considered stock, and not all cars needed the fix. As far as sites I do go to LS1tech quite a bit, but more importantly I actually take these engines apart and rebuild them.
Oh yes and it is not teflon or nylon, read up or learn to use google before you call me out.

I'm just interested to know why his MPH keeps getting faster as the day goes on. Didn't it say 98 mph earlier?

Some of the late Gen III's had those pistons as OE.

You said there was not any coated skirts period. After finding out they were simply saying it wasn't teflon or nylon doesn't make you right.
