99/00 Corvette or 03/04 Cobra

RE: 99/00 Corvette or 03/04 Cobra
Actually I wouldn't buy either. I would take a look at a 91-93 ZR 1. They are currently in my opion the most forgotten about car out there. And right now with all the Hype of the new Z06 people don't remember how fast those cars were. (the later years 405 hp!!!!) Right now the best part is you can pick them up super cheap. They are going for around 22-25k with less than 30,000 miles. I have owned both corvettes and mustangs. New and old, stock and modified. The bottom line is it comes down to your budget. A mustang has always been a better bang for the buck! The corvette a little more pricey of course, but you do get a lot of car (and headaches too). Mustangs are great for the track, but when it comes to speed and making left and right turns you better believe I want to be in a Vette (and we are not talking saleen here either). Plus, you will always turn more heads in a Vette than you will in a Stang! People in vette's know that they are driving a Vette. Not always the case in mustang's. It could be that soccer mom in a 6 cyl. Vette's only come one way, fast and faster!!!

I think there is a stereotype of a guy in a vette that is usually high income-grey hair-dude who does not really step on it enough. it looks to me also that a mustang is a sports car solution for the rest of the crowd. any such feelings ? how many young guys <30 do you see in a vette?

Lots.. just not in the newer vettes. Couple guys my age drive C4's. I know a few guys that own C3's... Dont know anyone who has a C5 but a friends dad picked up a C6.. Older vettes are for any age group.. Newer vettes are the old guy's who dont punch it... then in 10 years sell it to a young guy and buy another new one.

Not surprisingly, on a Mustang forum most of the advice you get will be from Mustang enthusaists, and be to buy a Mustang. If this is to be your only car, I would agree: a 'vette is not a good only car - too little room and trunk. Despite its power and speed the Cobra is much more practical on a day to day basis as an only car: even car nuts occasionally find a back seat useful or need to haul a coule of two by fours from Home Depot. From personal experience I can assure you a vette is utterly worthless here.
As to which is fastest, it depends, but I would lean toward the vette - having done a lot of work on both (although right now I don't own a Mustang - that might change in the near future). The Cobra is quite fast in a straight line, and corners very well, especially for a big car, but the vette is a handling champion, just about as anything you can find. Observations that it is easier to get 500 HP out of a Cobra than a vette are correct, but realize a 3250 lb vette does not need 500 HP to be as fast as a nearly 3800 lb Cobra. For about $3500-$4000 you can do CAI, headers and a heads/cam kit and have 435 RWHP, which makes it very fast indeed.
Finally, I would not touch a ZR-1 Corvette it unless I as a collector. They are difficult to tune and expensive to maintain and fix, and the range of aftermarket parts for them is minimal. Some parts are already hard to get.

ZR-1's are hard to find.
The Corvette as a whole is leaps and bounds above the Cobra.
As far as fun on the street and having some comfort and practicality, the Cobra wins hands down, not to mention the sky is the limit when it comes to the motor and transmission, the rear end is the only weak link and it's not all that weak.
