Default 8.8 Diff

Does anyone know a good website with illustrations or video to help me set-up my ring and pinion? I've read a few they all say to check backlash but none of them tell me where or how i am supposed to measure it. Any help is appreciated!!!!!!!

this is one of those things that you need to get some one that knows what they are doing to do, or at lest show you the first time. i pretty much do all my own work but i will let someone else set up gears.

Richmond sells an instruction video that is pretty detailed, if you are dtermined to do it yourself. I think its in Jegs and about 18 bucks....

Things you need: 4 oz friction modifier, 2 carrier bearings, 2 carrier bearing races, 1 front and rear pinion bearing and races, 1 pinion seal, 2 axle seals, one crush collar, go with FRPP gears as they are close enough the stock shims will be very close to the right lash and gear contact. Bestbuyperformance has the best gear prices$140.00 for Ford Racing 3.73's. Now you need to mark the bearing caps so you know where left and right go and where the top is. Plus there are 2 wide shims on each side of the carrier and they are diff from left to right, mark these also. Then when you get the pinion out you need to remove the bearing to get the shim out from behind it to reuse on the new pinion and bearing. Then when you get the bearing and shim back on you need to place the new crush collar on and put the flange and nut on. Take a 2.5 inch piece of 3/8 flat bar that is 30 inches long and drill two holes in it to bolt it to the flange with the D shaft retaing bolts. This will allow you to hold it while torquing up the nut and colapsing the crush collar. Get the thing torqued up to put a minor drag on the new bearings on the pinion when turning it with the palm of your hand. Now replace the clutch packs in the carrier and its bearings and put it in place. Torque the cap bolts to 80 ft lb. Put alxles and pin back in with a little loc tite on the pin retaing bolt. If you use FRPP gears you should end up in the 8 to 12 thous backlash ball park and good to go.

I set the backlash myself on a '66 Mustang with a dial micrometer. Changing the gear set yourself is do-able, but if you need the car back in service quickly I wouldn't suggest doing it.
