How can you tell if its vinyl or canvas? I bought my '02 used and its not a cobra but the top sure looks like canvas.. it is a heavy rubbery type of black material, tends to get your hand black if you rub around in the corners.

By the way, all Mustang convertibles, except Cobras, use the vinyl variety of convertible top. The cobras use canvas much the same a Mercedes and BMW.

First off, the owner's manual even discourages going through a car wash with a convertible. If you should go through any kind of a car wash, be sure it is the "brushless" variety. If you have anything other than a perfectly new, "tight" top, the forced water spray and forced air drying will more than likely cause a couple of leaks during the process.

If it feels like plastic, it's vinyl. It'd be obvious if it was canvas... it'd feel like cloth

I thought my 02 gt had a vinyl top because it looked like sailcloth. But apparently it's vinyl that's textured to look like cloth.

I had canvas on mine, and I replaced it with canvas. The best thing you can do, if you can, is to keep it indoors. Soap and water have kept mine clean and new looking so far, but it only about 6 months old.

I just use soap water & a soft brush to clean my top, but would like to find some sort of protector to smear onto it after it's clean. Especially because I drive it in winter too. And wow who puts baby oil on their top?? Never heard of that!

Also like the book says, try & park the car indoors or away from sunlight if you can, and even if it's in a garage, leave it with the top UP not down.

If anyone is still interested my local guy who owns a speed turned appearence shop since prob the 60's answered this question for me. He told me u can wash the top (the kind found on the GT) until your blue in the face and it won't really clean it thoroughly. He sold me a fabric cleaner, a dry foam spray that you use on a small section at a time. This $h!# really pulls the dirt out of the top. When your done use 303. If your not familiar with it look it up. It's no armor all. 303 is what i use for interior too. Spray it on wipe it off and go back over it with a clean cloth and it looks brand new. It doesn't give it that "just drove through the vaseline factory" look. I have to check the name on the fab cleaner but it even works incredible on carpet. If anyone replies I'll check the name tomorrow when i go in my garage.
