turn signal flasher being gay
Hello all~
I have a 97 GT. Great car, but the turn signal flasher is very odd. Particularly on cold days (occasionally on non cold as well) the flasher will be blinking and then just stop and stay on. Occasionally it will cycle very rapidly too. And no all the bulbs are fine! It does this whether I have left, right, or hazard selected. Do I just need a new flasher assembly? I found on alldata that it's got it's own special spot.
anyone else hear about this problemo or have it happen to them let me know.
have a great one!

flashers operate by having current travel through a thin strip of metal that completes a circuit....when that strip gets hot, it pops and breaks the connection
When the strip cools down (almost immediately) it will complete the circuit again and put power to the bulbs.....over and over again
Your strip of metal apparently isn't getting hot enough to "pop" so just throw a new flasher in there.....they're cheap

its the relay, i did that to mine. as soon as it started to do it, i new it was the relay, and my father said the same thing too. so i take it to the dealer, i didnt want the hassle of finding the relay and replacing it. so they say its the signal stalk, and they replace it within a couple of hours. try it in the parking lot, and guess what it does it. so i go in there and get a mechanic to sit in my car and i tell him to try the signal and hes like ooooo, oooooo mannnn ooooo ok. dumb ****s. so i told them i dont want it back until its fixed and they call me the next day and say its the relay. i was kinda pissed cuz i could have fixed it myself for pennies.
def the relay, mine would blink for a few times then stay on, and then not blink at all some times. then blink for awhile.

now when you say relay you mean the flasher itself? Or is there a separate relay for the turn signal?
I know on some older Fords I've worked on you can buy the little $3 cylindrical flasher and it's an easy fix, but where that spot is on my fuse panel is blank. I went on alldata and it shows the flasher as by itself as some big piece.
this isn't a life or death problem, just a pain in the a** because I have to keep cancelling/turning on the turn signal, a few times I've had to blink it manually lol.
I have 109000 miles on it so it's beyond warranty, and I'm goin to school to be a master tech so surely to God I can do this myself, ha ha... the car needs work here and there but it's my project and is so close to mint it's not funny..

you may need to replace your blinker fluid, someone has a link floating around on here somewhere to a site where you can get some[8D]

Blinker Fluid
Yep, I user it often
Keeps the o'l blinkers nice and healthy in my 97.
you guys are funny with the blinker fluid!
the relay is in the actual blinker switch. i had that problem with the windshield wiper on my 96 XR7 cougar. same exact parts as the mustang. same exact problems.
fortunately for me, about 2 months later, it fixed itself, then got hit by a pickup truck.
