Default Keys

Do all Mustang keys come with a chip inside of them? Or are they just big? I've been told if someone tried to copy the key and tried to use it, it would burn out the ignition or starter. This is what I've heard, but no sure if its true. And I also heard it would cost about $100.00 to make another key to start the car. Is this true also? Thanks.

Yes, keys do have a chip in them. I don't think that it will burn out the ignition or starter. A regular copied key will open the door, but just not start the car at all.

Actually, it starts the car for 5 seconds and then turns off completely. I know because i tried it with mine. I keep the copy in my wallet incase that someday i lock the keys inside, you never know.

The guy at the Ford dealership told me that if I used my 'door key' (key i got made which i keep in my wallet incase i lock my keys in when its running *again* (DOH!)) that it will "lock" up the car and they would have to come out and get it opened. They being the dealership. I call BS, however it wont start the engine... thats for sure.

Eh, that's funny.. I had a 97 Taurus SHO that had the same chip in the key and I had a regular key made and it wouldn't even turn the car. I just figured it would be the same for stangs.

I thought it was just the new ones, but wasnt sure. About how much does another key with a chip in it cost? I'm trying to get one for my g/f so she can drive my car without taking my keys.

chipped keys are expensive if you only have one. had that problem with the focus, only got one key when i bought it... i figured no big deal i'll just get another one made (wrong), if you have 2 keys i think it's around 20$ ...BUT if you only have one key (like me) it costs between 75$-95$ ...they said they needed 2 keys to program a new one.... otherwise it's a big bunch of mumbojumbo delear crap.

Thanks Crazyhorse, I guess its not that much. This lady I work with said to get one for her Altima would cost like $600, I was thinking B.S. but you never know.
