Default Building an engine -- question

Came across a Ford 460 big block engine, completely bare. I was thinking it'd be an excellent engine to get started on a project car, but I'm not all that experienced with engines at all, but that's why I'm looking into this. I imagine building an engine from a bare block would be a good way to learn about 'em, the block itself is being sold for $25, so that's not a problem. But if I'm going to be serious about this I need to know what I'm getting into, about how much money do you people think it'd cost to dress up and build a bare block? -- I'd hate for it to end up just an engine block sitting in the garage floor for everyone to trip over. Thanks in advance.

It's an excellent way to learn but what are you going to put it into? The cost can vary depending on how much you are going to do. I would set aside at least $2K.

Didn't have plans of putting it into anything yet, had only planned on building it on an engine stand, feed it a little to see if it runs right. Then later I might look into getting a project car to dump it into. Thanks for the reply.

The cost is all about what you want to do with it. If you're just building a stock motor, it's pretty inexpensive. A few hundred bucks. If you're building a 700 hp screamer, you'll probably need $12,000. Depends on what you want to do.

well, a 460 isnt a very usable engine. it will be a bitch to put into anything, besides an older truck. Plus, everything is more expensive for it. look for a 351W, that would be easy to put into something after it is built

got to love the the double post this is a better place for it any way.

theres nothing wrong with a big block and a 460 will fit in to a fox body if you wanted but its a much better truck motor. big inches mean big power if built right.

This is more for learning than anything else, might end up just parting it and selling the parts on ebay after I'm done, I just see a 460 BB for $25 being a good opportunity.

a buildable block for 25 bucks is a good deal but you need to think this through a little and theres on need in building it if your not gonna use it in something. buy a old ford something and build it for that. remember there is more to a car than just the engine.

Right :] But one step at a time, this would be my first project, I've done little more than just installing my cold air intake under the hood. I'd rather have a little more experience with even just the tools before tackling an entire vehicle build. I imagine once I've got the engine down and I've become more familiar with the tools I can expand onto other parts of the car.
