Smoke
I have a 89 GT and i tried to jump it and the jumper cables got hot and smoke came from just behind the battery. Can anyone help?

Did you have them hooked up correctly? Are the battery connections clean and tight?

Could be the selonoid if it external from the starter or a relay.

Also there is a proper sequence for jump starting you car. Go to
http://www.carbuyingtips.com/jumpstart.htm and scroll down a bit, read the article and let us know if you hooked it up correctly.
