taller gears will get 5th up in a better rpm range....compared to 3.27's
ORIGINAL: Twister
um, a lower gear will slow down your top speed. Land speed racers run high gear ratios, like a 2.48 or higher to go for top speed. a low gear like a 4.10 is for quicker acceleration, not top end

stock gears about 145, with 4.10s about 155ish couldnt tell

RE: Just curious...
how do you figure???..what if you have a 6spd..and 5th is your 1:1???
so you are telling me a .68 gear with 3.73's can't hit 150mph???
i guess people trapping 150mph in the 1/4 are full of it too huh?....there is more factors than tires, and gearing.

god, I love that 90% of all Mustang owners can't think past a quarter mile!lets do some simple math here in 1:1 gear, or 4th gear for a 5 speed OD tranny....with 245/45/R17's, 5000 rpm is about 93 mph with a 4.10 rear gear. With a 2.78 is about 137 mph. Your satement does not hold water

Going by the stock speedo at those speeds is like using a Fisher Price ruler.
And 4.10's will not raise your top speed but it will make 5th gear more useable. But regardless of gears you car will only go a certain speed with the HP it has.

THINK PAST THE END OF A QUARTER MILE! a low gear like a 4.10 will get you to a certain speed quicker than a high gear like a 2.73, but a high gear will be faster in the long run. I used a 1.1 tranny gear to help explain, it is simple math. The new 225/45R17-sized tire has a calculated diameter of 24.97", a circumference of 78.44" and will roll 835 times each mile, no mater what gear you are in, what your gear ratio is in, or your RPM...5000 RPM at a 1.1 tranny gear is 5000 RPM's for the driveshaft. A rear gear ratio is the percentage of times that the driveshaft turns in comparison to the rear tire, so a 2.78:1 rear gear will convert 2.78 turns of the driveshaft into one complete turn of the rear tire. a 4.10:1 gear ratio will turn 4.1 turns of the driveshaft into one revolution of the tire.
If a rear tire turns 835 times in a mile, a driveshaft using a 2.78 gear would turn 2321.3 times per mile while a 4.10:1 will have the driveshaft will turn 3423.5 times. That is why a 2.78 gear is a better freeway gear, you can cruise all day long turning less RPM's than a drag racing gear

RE: Just curious...
Tell em Twister! Lower Gear is good for Hauling, not top speed. Your engine can only turn up to a certain RPM before it blows up! Lower gear causes the the engine to spin at a higher rpm at any given speed. If you can do 150 top speed and put in a lower gear, to do 150 again with the new gear, you have to spin your engine up higher...hmmm? novel thought!

RE: Just curious...
Wow Twister your pretty damn stupid.
My post wasn't describing all out top speed but what effect different gears will have on it since someone else thought 4.10s would slow you down.
Take your magic formulas and shove them up your ***.
