The '05 GT auto works like this

If you put it in first it starts in 1st gear, in 2nd gear it starts in 1st, in 3rd gear it starts in 2nd gear, drive it starts in 1st. The tranny is not made to be manually downshifted, you can do it but it is not a auto stick.

757GT is right. It seems all fords (and maybe others) do this now. My Crown Vic Cruiser does the same. It actually freeked me out first time I threw the thing in a snowy ditch! Hahaha.
