They still make M5s, and M3s, two year waiting list to buy a new M5. My dad just ordered a Alpina B7 actually, Arizona is only supposed to get 2 of the 200 run they're making. He liked the M5, but the back seat was too small, B7 is the M5 engine in a 7 series. First day they took preorders was luckily the day we went car shopping, my dad likes HP and I told him about the M5, he just hated the tiny back seat.
hey oxsmsxo, i hope your dad realizes that an alpina b7 does NOT share the same powerplant as an e60 m5. but instead a centrigally supercharged version of BMW's ever popular 4.4 v-8. the m5 has a naturally aspirated v-10. the key difference in those engines lies in the torque.
2006 m5 v-10 has 505hp and 384ft/lbs of torque
2007 b7 v-8 has 500hp and 500ft/lbs of torque
most people dont know that the idea of the b7 actually came from a e60 5 series with the same powerplant, known as a alpina b5... never made available in this country... stupid emissions

Sweet, I think he will still be happy with that. Salesperson just did a bad job at explaining the engine I guess. He might have assumed since they were both 500hp, it was the same engine. And if you know anyone interested in one, refer em to me. My dad isn't necessarily a Bimmer type of guy, and would probably sell his slot. Probabaly a good investment too seeing as BMW atleast in Arizona won't sell for over MSRP if you order one. You can order a new M5 for 87ish, or they had a used one on their lot for 115k. Just people don't want to wait 2 yrs for the car to arrive. But for 5k down, he filled the 2nd slot in AZ, which the salesperson said would only get 2. I figure on a 200 car run, his 5k investment could return very healthy as this is going to be one of the bad boy BMWs out there. Numbers I am giving are direct from the sales guy we dealt with at the Scottsdale BMW. He wants the license plate B7 Bombr. It's gonna be a fast boat.

I've always thought that the Alpina (that's the 2 door vert?) is the best BMW, visually! Much better than the Z3 or 4 or whatever!
Also the old 3.0 was a nice classic.
Personally, I'd never fork over that kind of money for a new BMW, Mercedes, etc.
If you want performance that beats a Mustang, get a Vette!

WELL ALPINA MADE a version of the Z8 which is the sickest looking bmw ever... and its ok to say you would rather have a vette then a bimmer now because chevy has definately stepped up there product quality on the vette since the c5 was introduced... but back in the c4 vette days.... I DONT THINK SO SCOOTER!!!!

I have a E39 540 that my wife drives, stock to stock the mustang will pull ahead about a car length to 100 but the BMW will be right there at 100 and may pull away. At 150 the BMW feels like your doing 80 where the mustang feels like you are doing 250. If your talking a road course the BMW will corner better with much less effort. The traction control on the BMW is second to none in corners. Of course with mods to the mustang it would probably even out. i love the effortless driving experiance on the BMW but love the fun factor of the mustang more. Anyway, I only had to pay half for the mustang of what I paid for the BMW.

RE: GT vs. M5
Yeah, actually, I do believe it was a 540, ........I must've wished it into a M5 to take the sting away. Nonetheless, he got a rolling lead on a rush hour expressway and just out handled me. One of these days we'll meet up at poll off the light onto the expressway and it'll be a different story.

Still, I'd rather have a Stang and half the cash than an $81500 M5. Just my $0.02, though.
