I have noticed that when I brake from "high" speeds, the steering wheel begins to vibrate only when I apply the brakes. What could be the cause of this?

Could it just be brake wear from auto-x and open track racing?

I get the same things, usually from 100 on up... Mostly i believe its the small size of the rotors and the quick over heating of the pads. i reccoment after market pads, but the rotors on mine have developed *hot spots* so even though its a long way off and not on the priority list, im getting new brakes.

Long run new brake system, the stock system works but not at the high performance level we all drive our cars at. For now high performance pads would help but, I dunno it all depends on the car but for me its definitely the brake pads.

He means your rotor(s) may me warped. If you're in the habit of braking hard from high speeds, you likely overheated them, which can cause them to warp slightly.

If your steering wheel vibrates as you apply brakes say coming off the highway onto a ramp at normal speed then your front rotors are warped; You can have them machined but they will be thinner and will warp again even quicker. Good quality rotors are inexpensive; I wouldn't machine. Don't buy the cheap Taiwan imitations; I think it was Wagners (made in USA) that I put on my son's 02 Taurus last year; same symptom; fixed! ...do pads if you have even modest wear, they're inexpensive too, doing pads and rotors isn't bad $$ wise. ...have done a number of them myself so not sure about labor costs.

When your rotors are warped and you brake at high speeds, your pads will just follow the warped pattern of the rotors, and thus this will give you that vibrating you are feeling. If you get new pads and don't machine your rotors then it won't fix the problem, and it'll just end up destroying your pads. You need to machine your rotors to give them the flat smooth surface they once had, and get new pads to go with that.

I *think* getting any silicone on the rotors can cause this too- careful if you shine your tires- hard to burn off silicone.
