RE: Ok, What's so great about this ROYAL PURPLE crap?
I grew up working at a test fleet with about 100 ford rangers. We did all kinds of engine oil tests and this was about the time synthetic oils were hitting the market. At about 50k if you take a car that used nothing but synthetic and a car that used nothing but regular recommended motor oil the difference is night and day, especially on the cams. I've used synthetic since and will recommend it to anyone. As for the the HP gains, we never did anything of that sort...

My opinion in the difference between the synthetics is based on who has the best advertiseing. Synthetic is synthetic and petroleum is petroleum. There is where the difference lies. Synthetic offers better lubrication on a thinner oil, increased stability in viscosity and lower emissions of internal gases i.e sulphurs. When petroleum oils heat up they produce gases which can become corrosive to your engine if left for long periods of time. They also create the coking issues or gummieness. Synthetics dont. Syntetics maintain there viscosity longer as well. That being said dirty oil is dirty oil. All dirty oil causes damage. Change your oil regularly wether it is petroleum or synthetic. Engine oil removes dirt and debris as well as providing lube.

I let Ford change the oil in the wifes 2004 Explorer, and my 2005 F150, they are both 4.6 motors, and Fords standard oil 5W20 oil for them (and the Mustang GT's) is a semi-synthetic. All of my Fords, including the new Mustang, ('07 GT gets here the week of the 23rd of June!!!) will be getting their oil changed at Ford every 3000 miles.
That way if a warranty issue ever develops, Ford's OASIS system verifies oil brand, and change frequency. Just my opinion, but it gives me another stick to beat on the Ford regional rep. with.
Happy crusin'

Be aware with semi-synthetic oils as they can contain as little as 5% synthetic to carry the name semi-synthetic.
If not using the above mentioned, mobile one, royal purple, amsoil, redline, then I would suggest Valvoline full or semi synthetic, or stick with ford doing your changes.
I was on a road course last week with the temp gauge hitting 3/4 the way up hammering around the track. I felt more comfortable to keep her going knowing I had Mobile1 in there.
I still change at 3000 miles, but knowing it has better protection for stuff like that its worth it to me.
Still have a hard time swallowing the fact that they call for 5w20, but its what I use.
