One forum member finds that shifting at 6500 rpm works best for him at the 1/4 mile drag strip. His naturally aspirated Mustang GT has a modified tune, CAI, and a few other bolt-ons, but uses stock tires and a stock gear, and it has a best time of approx. 12.6 sec. so far. He said that shifting at that rpm allows him to cross the finish line in 3rd gear, whereas using a lower rpm shift point would increase his e.t. by forcing him to shift into 4th before finishing.
wow, in 3rd gear running that time???
im into redline in 4th gear by the time i cross the line. i shift high to maximize my power curve in each gear considering i use the meat of the torque band and up to peak hp points in 4th anyway with 4.30s.

Find what rpm's your car makes it peak hp at and set your shift points 200-300 rpms above that. Usually that will yield the lowest et's at the track, at least for me it does.
You're almost right, just backwards. You should set your shift points 200-400 rpms BEFORE your peak and use a shift light. The reaction time of actually shifting has to be factored. Your goal is to shift dead on your peak HP curve.

There is no single shift point(s) to give because there are so many factors with GEARS being the biggie. I don't care what set-up you have, you are not passing the traps in 3rd with 4.10's+ unless your running in the 18's...lol

Every set-up is unique. You have to get on a dyno and see your HP curve and then you'll know for sure, no guesswork, just facts.

Here's a link to his posts. Also, he ran a 12.9, and not a 12.6. My mistake.

as long as the engine has load on it, you don't keep the rpms up there for an extended period (ie, SHIFT), and you don't tach out all the time, its not bad for the motor. to a very slight degree, it can even be good for the motor on occasion under certain circumstances

edit: ski--ya 12.9 makes sense...i was gonna say that 12.6 on stock gearing (other than that one shop that did it with just intake and slicks) would take enough mods that you'd be trapping a lot more than 3rd gear could handle!
