I have always done it in every auto I have had over the years with no problems.

 

why would you wanna shift in auto? put it on drive and drive the car..

 

I argree unless you have a shift kit, it will still shift the same.

I like downshifting with my automatic sometimes to slow the car down to a stop sign or light. The sound the exhaust makes is awesome when I do that. I make sure I'm not going too fast when I do it.

 

That is why i sometimes shift it manually to hold it in gear longer for the rumble. This is why i was asking the question. Thanks for the responses. First auto i've owned in many years and was not sure about damaging it with all the new ecm and pcm control modules today.

 

no,i disagree. If you shift manually even without a shift kit, the car still grabs differently than being in drive.

I put my car IN drive and it's in O/D at 30 mph with normal throttle.

WOT
I put car IN drive and floor it and it will shift at about 5800 rpms which is perfect.

Manual
I put car in 1st and I choose at what rpm's I shift at without having to be at WOT and down shifting sounds so nice Rap Rap Rap rumble rumble Smile.
This also lets you get rid of the horible auto/lag at town speeds makes it feel really snappy.
