Top speed
No more replies so the TSb links comes off now.
This is probably in the hand book but does anyone know what the top speed is roughly in 3rd gear? I ask this because I was going slow in 5th, maybe 45/65 and dropped to 4th to whip past a few cars. No problem, looked and sounded sweet.
Next stretch, slow in 5th again but dropped to 3rd, then got a bog down sound for a mila second. Did not think I was going that fast or I would not have done it but it let me know clearly it was wrong by the sound. Kinda remined me of a going to cut off sound. I know its hard to imagine what I mean but maybe someone else has done it before. Well anyway, once I heard this bogged down gonna cut off sound (really only like 1 sec) I went up to fourth and continued without problem. But the feel and sound scared me a little like, what did u do?
. Have u heard of this before?
Thats what has me mixed up, I did not really hear a loud sound from redlining it was a totally different sound kinda like if you went from 1st to fourth gear the sound you would get.
I also heard people speak of a TSB. Is this what happened?
Any opinions???

RE: Top speed of 3rd gear?
Professor Wizard posted a handy table...
https://mustangforums.com/m_1666493/tm.htm
P.S. stock redline is 6250 which is about 108MPH in 3rd on this table...
No sign of the rev limiter around there for me, but I shifted right at that point...
Perhaps it did kick in gently and that is why I felt a need to shift?

RE: Top speed of 3rd gear?
There should be no problem with what you did. I believe your concern is steming from the Mustang hesitating when you dropped it into 3rd. Mine does the same thing, seems as though the computer is trying to figure everything out. If you just stay on it, the computer will get everything situated and you'll take off like a bat out of hell. One of the things I know that has helped to prevent this for me is trying to Rev match on the down shift. When I do this it seems as though the engine is content.

RE: Top speed of 3rd gear?
Not to insult you, but did you rev match and rev to around 4K rpms before you let the clutch out in 3rd or where you going 50ish in 5th then just dropped it in 3rd, because you would have felt like the car was breaking for a second and a massive RPM change from 1200rpms to 4000 rpms and then allow you to go

RE: Top speed of 3rd gear?
The hesitation might be the fuel pump issue. Had you been maintaining the previous speed for a while? This is a known issue and there's a TSB on it. Mine goes in next week for a new fuel pump and sending unit.
