Default Snow tires for 2006 Mustang GT? Realistic?

I live in Chicago and must admit that I absolutly love my Mustang GT Torch Red. Iv'e owned the car for 7 months now and by this time I was ready to trade in my previous car; I will not get rid of this car for good while--well if a family emergency doesn't occur. I have not seen one Torch red Mustang GT yet by my house so I also love that I sort of have a one of a kind color, everyone has Black or Yellow or Blue.
I have lived in Chicago for all my life 30 years. It begins to snow in December and stops sometimes in February, I was thinking of getting a beater car (old car), my limit was $1000 dollars, to drive in the winters and was planning to store the Mustang but is it realistic to get snow tires put some weight in the back and carefully drice the car in the snow? Has anyone--living in the snowy northern states--succesfully driven their mustang gt in the snow?
It will cost me less to purchase snow tires then to get a beater car; but if I get into a car accident my premium will got up higher then it already is, feed back will be greatly appreciated.

I drove my 2000 GT in the snow once without snow tires or weight and was all over the place. I have a winter car and think its worth it. Yes, snow tires are cheaper but its great not having all that salt get on your car. Keeps the mileage lower too. I'm sure its doable to do the snow tires though especially if you already know how handle rear-wheel drive in the snow.

The 05-07 Mustang GT's snow traction is much better than the older GT's because the former has all season tires where the latter had summer pseformance tires. Also, the former has more weight over the rear tires, traction control, and a limited slip differential.
My 05 GT went thru 2 northeast winters without any traction problems so far, and that's without any extra weight in the trunk.

I used to drive my 2002 MGTvert in the snow all the time (north NJ). Every once in a while you will get totally stuck, but its doable. Keep some chains or plastic tire wraparounds in the trunk so you can move in a surprize snow storm. If you get a cheap car instead, consider spending a little more. I tried the same strategy and those cheap beater cars will cost you a fortune in repairs. If you can spend $2k on the beater you will prolly be less stressed. I finally broke down and got a used durango for $14k which will go thru 2 feet of snow and carry a lot more chicks than my mustang can fit.

Blizzaks are awesome. I live in Chicago and I drove my GT last winter with the Blizzis and I had no issues. The ride is noisier and harder but traction is good. Right now I have a set of Pirelli P7000 on 18" aftermarket rims.

I drove my 2001 GT avery winter I had it, and I live in NW Ohio. Never had a problem with it, in fact many days on the drive to work I saw trucks and other vehicles stuck in snow that the Stang just chugged right through. My guess is that some of those other vehicles that were stuck had the ever popular bad driver mod, but the fact is I never had a issue in my Stang driving on snow and ice with all season tires.
