Thanks for the responses I will think about it seriously; my biggest fear is some yahoo hitting me. Some people drive like morons and it gets really congested in the Chicago streets. I will be devistated even if some one bumps me from behind. I will continue to think about it look at both tires and cars.

I live near Green Bay where we have similar weather as you and i went through the first half of last winter with my new 06 mustang v6 and the second half of the winter with my 05 GT and both were just fine! I do have a GMC 4x4 but hardly ever drove it! I will say that the tires on the v6 stang were alot better than the GT's in snow so if i were still driving my GT i would pick-up a extra set of the v6 take-offs.

I'm on the fence. I have a Mazda 3 with winters that I can drive but the lease is up in Dec and I don't know what we'll do for a replacement car (if any). It's supposed to be for the wife but she still doesn't have her license. Maybe I'll have to suck it up and start driving with her so she can practice and take the test.

I've driven Mustangs a lot in the Winter in some areas that get some crazy amounts of snow with little issue. A good set of winters and maybe some weight in the back is all you need. With these new cars though that's less of a concern with TC and the additional weight they already have. My biggest concerns would be the yahoo's as already noted and the rock chips. I hae a clear bra but around here they use boulders to sand the roads.

Prior to the early 80's, everything was RWD, and ppl got along just fine, no matter where they lived in snow country. Ask Mike Hawke, and check out his "sig".
Good snow tires and a perhaps a little weight in the rear, and you will be "good to go". Spend the grand on snow tires and rims, not some piece of junk that'll cost more $ to maintain and insure. JMO
