I've had my ESCORT Passport 8500 X50 for about a year and it works great. I paid $299 plus tax at Best Buy. I detects all of the radar guns cops use Ka, K, X, bands as well as Laser. It has been compared to other radar detectors in the same price range and it always scores very well.

Well I have the passport 8500 in my truck and the 8500 x50 in my car from escort and they are both awesome. It is deffinately worth the money and helps limit the number of tickets you recieve.

You could pick one up for quite a bit less. I've got a cobra....(I think that's the brand) and it works great. However, if the cop is using laser....by the time you hear the warning it's too late. The other bands work great to get slowed down in time if you're in any traffic. I've heard a lot of cops will turn their radar on and off when they're driving to help combat the use of fuzzbusters.

If they're using a K or Ka band gun my detector will usually pick it up about .25 - .5 miles away depending on traffic and hills etc. Easily worth the money, but learn how to use it well.

i own a Escort Cordless Solo S2; which is my first rd. I like it and think its worth buying however there not perfect and cops are very smart now. There have been times were it went off way to late for me to slow down but lucky for me; i was not speeding(then) i really like it for the highway, etc. that when i find my self speeding. But then there were times were it went off w/ the cop way up head.

I think the best thing is if your going to speed no matter what, get what and treat it like you really dont have it. I know kids (high school) that think they can do 90 down back roads and there %100 safe cuz they have a rd. and on top of it; its one of those cheap 50 bucks one.

Valentine 1 is the way 2 go, it is 2 radar detectors in one. It normally saves me around 2-3k in tickets per month.

By far the best "Bang for the buck"!

I have a valentine one due to the recommendations on here, plus my race instructor buddy has one. It's nice as it shows where the radar is hitting you from (front or back). Do search on here for a specific brand. I think you will find that if you want the best, your decision will be either the last escort (8500?) or valentine 1.

I would agree that cops *are* pretty smart. The times I'm gotten hit by laser I wouldn't have been able to slow down (but luckily was just going with the flow).

What they save you from is undue sweating/slowing...e.g., passing a cop going the other direction, but you haven't received an alert so you don't have to sweat that you're going to get got.

They are not a license to flat out haul...you will still get busted by a laser if you are the only person on the road doing 90. They are an added layer of protection, not an out right fix. You would have to step into a jammer for that.

Also, in urban driving the auto door openers set it off like crazy.

I used a radar detector for years and averaged 1-2 tickets per year. About 5 years ago mine died and I haven't had a ticket since. These devices cause a false sense of security. Every ticket I got was from a cop hidden on the interstate and by the time my detector squalled I was dead meat. The cops know that everyone has detectors so they gun when they see you in the fast lane and your only hope is they get the guy in front of you.
