Default Mufflers?

Does anyone know if mufflers are required by law in any state? I am having problems convincing my wife that they don't affect emissions tests!! Any words of wisdom or links to web sites would be great.

Thanks

Most States do in fact require muffler to be on the car. Will running no mufflers effect the emission NO. Personally i would not run the car without mufflers as I feel it makes the car sound like crap. Get yourself a set of Borla Stingers you will not be disappointed.

I think the noise factor comes into play as far as being illegal.
I did hear a Gt with no mufflers and it sounded pretty good actually, but never heard it at WOT.
