Grade of oil / car use

RE: Grade of oil / car use
As I write this in 2007, almost all, if not all engines sold in passenger cars today have roller cam followers. This has resulted in serious changes in our oil needs and oil fomulas.
The main reason for thicker oils in the past, as well as differences in the additive packages were to provide life for flat tappet cams and lifters. The PSI load on these components is TREMENDOUS!!!! With roller cam followers, lighter oils suffice quite well, as do the newer oils without the Zinc/Phosphate additives. The Zinc/Phosphate acted as a sacrifical metal to extend cam an lifter life.
In your 4.6, as well as most any modern engine, 5W20 or 5W30 premium oil formulated to the latest SAE spec will suffice quite nicely, either in dino OR synthetic. For those of you, however, that may also have an older car with a flat tappet cam, you need to use either a racing oil or diesel oil such as Chevron Delo to get the ZPPD additive necessary for reasonable cam and lifter life.

1+ I agree...I mean you guys actually think that Ford didn't put in the man hours and R&D to make these motors work for at least the 5 yr/60,000 mile warranty? If Ford recommends it and the oil you use meets or exceeds the factory recommendation you should be fine. Don't you think Ford factored in that the temp extremes in the U.S. ( much less anywhere else they sell mustangs) into what type and grade of oil to use? I too do not think it is naive to believe what Ford RECOMMENDS! Example- I use 5w-30 (factory recommends) in my DD and that has a warranty of 10yrs/100,000 miles and do you think I am going against recommendation on what grade to use of oil for my DD. Not me- and the car has 90,000 miles and is going strong and never had warranty work on the drivetrain (motor). Change at the recommended intervals or sooner if you want and use the grade that the manufacturer recommends and you are golden....if any thing goes wrong then the dealer honors the warranty as you have proof of doing what you should do to maintain your ride. I'm definitely a street driver, it's my daily ride. I live in West Texas, actually, where it's super dusty. Still, I go with the 5,000 mile oil changes and use Mobil 1 5W-20. I'm no engineer, so I trust the engineers to steer me right. I don't believe that's naive, and it took me a LONG time to train myself out of the 3,000 mile mentality.

Anyway, 5w20 as per the owner's manual. Pick your fav. brand and go full synthetic for best results. Kthx.
