Default Limited Slip Differential?

I've had my '06 GT for about a year now. Anyway, I thought I'd bought the car with every single option barring the 18 inch wheels, which was fine by me since 17 inch tires are cheaper and I'd probably end up replacing the factory wheels at some time in the future.

I also opted for the automatic transmission. No flames, please. (I have some knee problems, so the auto works better for me.)

Anyway, I'm reading Mustang boards tonight and come across a post about limited slip differentials. I mean, don't ALL GT's have limited slip differentials?! That's just common knowledge, it's standard, right? Surely MY car must have a limited slip differential. I mean it was the fully loaded GT Premium.

Luckily, I saved the spec sheet from Ford for my model year. It turns out that a limited slip differential was optional on 2006 GT automatics. I run to my files and check my window sticker. My vehicle does not have a limited slip differential. I read and re-read the sticker many times to make sure...it just doesn't.

Firstly, I've learned to NEVER again buy a new car off the lot, EVER. The next new vehicle I buy will be ordered and I'm going to get a list of every single option. [:@]

I've owned lots of Fords...loved them all. I have two now. But, honestly, unexpected options have got to stop. It sort of reminds me of the 3.31 vs. 3.55 gears they're putting in the '07 manuals. I bet there are several people out there thinking the 3.55 was standard and ended up buying a vehicle with a 3.31.

I'm getting ready to have 3.73 gears installed. In fact, I just got them in the mail a day or two ago. Since I'm going to have my differential apart soon I have a few questions:

1) Are there any negatives to upgrading to a limited slip differential? I can't think of any, really, other than cost. Still. There must be some drawbacks.
2) Would it be worth it to upgrade to a limited slip differential? (cost vs. benefit)
3) How hard would it be for the mechanic to do?
4) If I decide to do the upgrade, then which limited slip differential should I buy?
5) Any idea why Ford would make it optional on the auto other than saving a buck?

Any help is GREATLY appreciated!

I thought they were satndard as well but not much surprises me. Upgrading really depends on what type of driving you intend to do with the car. If it's just a street car leave it alone. If your going to race it go with a Detroit locker for drag or a Torsen for road racing. If you are going for performance of any type as long as you have to make the initial investment don't bother with a traction-lock. They don't last long. Mine is already toast.

Holy ****, thanks for pointing it out! I'm getting ready to buy the new 07 GT /w 5spd, this will be something I'm going to pay attention to. Thanks.

interesting. i just checked the spec sheet for the 2007 model mustang and it also says that the LSD is optional on a GT with an automatic transmission. funny thing is, i went to fordvehicles.com and looked over all the options when building a mustang and nowhere does it allow me to select that option. the only thing there is the 3.55 gear which is for the manual.

there has to be an explanation

EDIT- here is the explanation:

https://mustangforums.com/m_1613425/tm.htm

all GT's have an LSD. it's just the gear ratio that is different between the auto and manual.

I went to there and built one, I didn't see 3.55 option for the manual. Am I missing something? Both GT Delex and GT Premium didn't show that option.

it's actually all GT's have limited slip differentials. the gear ratio is the only thing that can be different between the 2 trannies.

Surprising, huh? I took a screen capture from the 2006 Mustang Brochure that I downloaded from the Ford site last year (first photo).

To see the full 2007 list of options go here and download the PDF from Ford:

http://www.fordvehicles.com/cars/mus...eatures/specs/

Here is the screen capture from the 2007 Brochure from Ford. (Second photo)

The 2007 GT with automatics have a limited slip differential as optional!

Also check out the 5 Speed Manual GT Transmission (3.55 gears) as an open circle beside it. That's because it's optional. If you don't believe me, then check out the full options list here:

http://www.mustangheaven.com/stangsp...007Mustang.pdf

Flip to page 7 and read at the top. 3.31 gears are standard in all mustangs including 5 speeds. The manual as an option for 3.55's.

Ford doesn't list any of these options on it's webpage only in the "fine print".
