Default What could the problem be ?

My friend owns 05 mustang as some know and it is a manual tranny it has over 130,000km on the mileage and now there is this problem in 2nd gear ... when upshifting of downshifting to second there is always this kshshs sound of the miss shift.. We changed the tranny oil recently and now he is thinking of getting spec stage 1 clutch with pressure plate and aluminum flywheel.. will this fix the problem ?

thanks

Sounds like a bad synchronizer. If that is the only gear he gets the grinding in, a clutch is not the answer.

The gears in a tranny are spinning at different speeds. As you slip it into gear, the synchronizer makes the two gears that are about to mesh spin at the same speed. If the synchro for a particular gear is not working, that gear will grind. You can keep them from grinding by double clutching, but that's an acquired skill, and a bit inconvenient. You can't speed shift if you double clutch, either. Better than grinding your gears. Even better would be to get it fixed.

Unfortunately Saud, there is no easy fix here. The trans will have to be torn into and gone through. Means it has to come out, so a clutch is a good idea at that point.

Dayum.. and how much is the syynchronizer going to cost ? Just alone without the tearing apart and installing.

Synchros themselves are cheap. Probably less than $20. It is the labor that will get you!
