gto in italian stood for gran tourismo orimagatto.

Close, the spelling is tricky....... actually it is Gran Turismo Omologato

But the rest is right. Ferrari actually coined the name for their GTO. Pontiac ripped it off as a "tribute". But as a 67 GTO owner, I think it was well worth it. :D

lol. Or Gas Tires Oil. Allfun.All I know is owning both the 67 and the stang. If I were in my stang I would not want to meetthe goat at a stoplight. From a roll the stang would really be in trouble.

New "gto's" are another story. More of a AJB to me. "Austrailian Jelly Bean" They are not worthy of the badge. Which believe it or not, the shape of the coveted GTO badge from the 60's was changed to cover a hole in the fender of the Monero body. Gotta love them GM jelly bean counters.

As far as the mustang GT'sname. I believe it was always reffered to as Grand Touring.
