gt can originate from gto.

gto in italian stood for gran tourismo orimagatto.

most people think gto stood for get turned on

gto actually stands for grand touring homologation-meaning parts from racing cars were used on your car

Close, the spelling is tricky....... actually it is Gran Turismo Omologato

But the rest is right. Ferrari actually coined the name for their GTO. Pontiac ripped it off as a "tribute". But as a 67 GTO owner, I think it was well worth it. :D

lol. Or Gas Tires Oil. Allfun.All I know is owning both the 67 and the stang. If I were in my stang I would not want to meetthe goat at a stoplight. From a roll the stang would really be in trouble.

New "gto's" are another story. More of a AJB to me. "Austrailian Jelly Bean" They are not worthy of the badge. Which believe it or not, the shape of the coveted GTO badge from the 60's was changed to cover a hole in the fender of the Monero body. Gotta love them GM jelly bean counters.

As far as the mustang GT'sname. I believe it was always reffered to as Grand Touring.

I had a 1968 torino 390 GT Fastback. On the inside of the door in black and chrome it read "Grand Touring". It really was grand.

It actually is Gran Turismo, the GTwas inspired by the Europen race, which the Mustang performance package was designed for, same applied for Torinos and they both did well. These were cars that were desiganted to race in the trans american (or trans am) class, they had suspension and performance upgrades, the public fell in love with them and the BIG BLUE OVAL (Ford) put them into the production line up, thank god.
Never meant to be grand touring, however that is what the public always reffered to it as.
