Want to turn my Stang into a Porsche 911 Turbo
Not literally, of course, but performance wise, seeing as how I can't afford the Porsche.
Here is the best info I could find on the Porsche:
List price $129,685
Price as tested $141,285
Curb weight 3610 lb
Engine, transmission 3.6 liter turbo F-6; 5-spauto.
Horsepower, bhp @ rpm 480 @ 6000
0–60 mph 3.3 sec
0–100 mph 8.3 sec
0–1320 ft (1/4 mile) 11.6 sec @ 118.3 mph
Top speed 193 mph
Braking, 60–0 mph 116 ft
Braking, 80–0 mph 207 ft
Lateral accel (200-ft skidpad) 0.97g
Speed thru 700-ft slalom 70.7 mph
Our mileage, EPA city/highway est 18.0, 17/25 mpg
--------------
So I'm thinking full suspension/drivetrain/brake upgrades(whatever is available aftermarket for our cars including 1 piece shaft but no gears since that will screw the top end) - 10 grand installed
And supercharger plus most of the common bolt-ons - again ~10 g's installed
Take the 25K out the door plus my 1,500 Sebring trade-in, add these upgrades, and I am at 46,5K.
Will I run with the Porsche or am I blowin smoke(esp with my estimates of the costs)?
I am also thinking that I am starting with the wrong car, (but I love the looks), maybe I should get a used Vette and mod it to really get close to the Porsche cheaper(I am more into the curve hugging, handling, instant pass, and the occasional 1/4 than I am into just drag racing).
Thanks in advance for any input, suggestions, opinions,
Lance
PS: Or I could just go buy a brand new sportbike for ~10 grand and blow all these cars away, LOL.

yea, that's what I was thinking as well, might be able to straight-line with it, 1/4 etc... but never gonna keep up in the curves(esp with the AWD)or top end....guess that's why the pricetag (and German engineering)...damnit... I see a sportbike in my future...LOL

RE: Want to turn my Stang into a Porsche 911 Turbo
This really is one of those where if you want the same #'s you probably need to save up or go with a different starting point like you say. The Mustang has its inherent strengths and weaknesses.
If you are serious about racing and want a low-cost entry point then the Mustang is a great place to start. You need to drive a well prepped Mustang and decide if it handles the way you like and go from there - I've driven a lot of different cars on the track and maybe its just my affinity for it because it is MY car but my 05 GT is much more natural for me to drive.
I am building a couple other cars for the track but the Mustang is the most fun I have driven. Everyone who has driven it or in it with me on the track has jumped out with huge grins on their faces..this includes a couple of Cupdrivers.
I love driving a Porche, Exige, M3 and even the odd Z06 - they are really fun cars but I am prepping a Mustang because its what I want. If I wanted a Porche, BMW or Z06I would have bought one (now having said that, I just MIGHT by a new Camaro when they come out - maybe not to track it though).
If you are just tooling around then have fun building your toy - nothing wrong with that. If you are planning to be competitive build with the opportunities and limitations of the Mustang in mind.
Having said all that - youcan get "sort of" close if you approximate the GT500KR but if you want a porche then get a porche.
GT500 & KR "by the numbers"
Curb weight 3900lbs/3800 (KR)- Start a diet. You'll need to go with a race trim to get rid of 300 lbs.
Weight dist 57%/43% (front to rear) - Stock GT is 53/47. Porche is around 40/60 (rear engine) - dont worry about matching this, just make it so you get straightline and cornering power to the wheels.
Lateral Acceleration 0.92 g avg - this is one of the kickers - its a high CG car with not the greatest coupling of front and rear roll center...don't know what to say here.
top speed 155mph - its elecontrically limited...you can bust that open
0-60 4.5sec/4.1 (KR)- dropping some weight will help - you'll have different torque curve vs a Porche - if you want under 4sec you need around 600HP
braking 60-0 110 - get rid of the Brembo fronts and stock rear and get the PFC complete package (about $6k) - you will be able to out-late brake even a Porche 911.
600ft slalom 69.7 mph - 700 ft is around 73s

RE: Want to turn my Stang into a Porsche 911 Turbo
It's tough to hit those 0 - 60 times witha Mustang, given the light rearend, coupled with the monster torque that comes along with big HP numbers needed to push our cars there......traction becomes non-existant.

Thanks Pony, you are way more well (up in it, with all your exp) than I am.
I can not come close to affording the cars you mention, which is why that'sa mute point for me.
Your analysis of my situation is leaning me even more towards the sportbike.
Thanks.
Lance

RE: Want to turn my Stang into a Porsche 911 Turbo
I don't know why you wouldn't want gears. You're not going to get to mid 11s very easily if you aren't gearing the car better. I am no expert on aerodynamics, but I know that coming up on the 200 mph mark is a big deal. I don't think the Mustang is suited for anything above 160 or so. Anything faster and you're going to need a car with a different shape so it holds to the ground better. A big ugly wing is not going to do anything to hold the front tires down.
I have heard it debated many times about how gears will not end up cutting into your top speed. You'll have to do a search because again I am no expert. However you aren't driving to work at 190 mph...so why not have all the fun where you normally drive....80 or so and below?
