WHY??
I've noticed almost everybody recommends 4.10s for manual S197s and 3.73s for autos....why? is it a driveability issue or just for the sake of fuel milage? 4.10s gives harder acceleration and before someone says (oh what about the top end?) I say with 4.10s you can stillreach about 155m/h at 6000rpms in 5th gear! isn't that enough for a Stang?
The reason why people recommend different gears taller gears for the auto is due to the auto having a shorter OD 5th gear.71 vs the .62 OD5th gear of the manual. Plus with the exception of 1st gear the rest of the gears in the auto areshorter than themanual. But you could certainly run 4.10s in an auto. I have no problems reaching 140 with my 4.10s and plenty of power left, I just start punking out.
And no 155 isn't enough for a stang[8D]

BTW what I meant by 155m/h being enough or not is the aerodynamocs of the car and it's overall suspension and chassis design, you need some serious suspension if you wanna go over 155, plus...are you really gonna go over 155? why and where? I don't see the point...
Timmay is correct about the gears...we have the 5r55s in the mustang. This makes the 3.73 a better "match" for a dd auto. 4.10's will work just fine in fact I do believe I've read about 4.30's in an auto before. Not real sure why but I dont think the 3.55 option was or is available from the factory on the auto.
I think that with the 4.10's though you may run through your power band too soon though which would have effect your 1/4 mile times as I understand it anyways....

3.73 in my auto, works like a dream... i was told that i would just end up breaking 4.10's if i put that in my auto. is this true that you risk a higher chance of breaking gear ratios in the auto with 4.10 than 3.73?

I thought 5th gear in autos is 0.75 and 0.70 in manuals? that 0.62 is for pre-2004 manual trans?
