Default RE: Pinging after dyno tune?

UPDATE:

My tuner emailed me a new tune. He said they took out three degrees of timing.

I am still getting this sound. I am starting to think maybe it isn't detonation. Like I said, my A/F ratio was right on, and now we have removed timing, and the tuner was suprised that I would need to do this in the first place, based on his experience.

ClemsonAce - you mentioned you thought it sounded like possibly an air intake sound. I hadn't thought about it, but perhaps this could be it, I noticed you also have a C&L intake like me. Anyone else with an aftermarket intake getting this sound?

I had my car dyno tuned recently. The A/F ratio was right on 13.0, where the tuner said it should be.
I thought the ideal A/F ratio is 12.0?

I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong, but I was under the impression that 13.0 is ideal for N/A cars.

I've read thatN/A S197's make the most power at WOT with an A/F ratio of 12.5-13.0

I thought of something else, I know that carbon buildup can cause pinging. Perhaps my previous tune was running too rich and I have some serious carbon buildup in the engine?

I never really saw a lot of soot on the tailpipes and when I dyno'd my mail order tune after longtubes, it actually showed it was running lean, but perhaps the longtubes changed something.

Do you guys think an engine decarbonization would bea good next troubleshooting step? Or would it be unlikely that a year of driving around with a rich tune would be enough to cause pinging.

That assumes this is pinging in the first place, I really don't know for sure if it is at this point...

Did you check the spacer between engine and trans?. This has solved the "scraping"
sound others have heard.

You candump a can of Seafoam or Techron into the gas tank to see if that stops the sound(Note: It may take a few hundred miles to work.)
If it does, then carbon build up is the cause.

I had my car dyno tuned recently. The A/F ratio was right on 13.0, where the tuner said it should be.

Under WOT and higher RPMs, I am getting a sound. It isn't really a pinging. I am not getting the higher pitched, tinny, metallic sound. I have heard that classic pinging sound before, and this is not it. This is lower pitched. My first impression was that it was more of a "scraping" sound, or like velcro being ripped apart. But the more I think about it, perhaps it could still be considered to be a marble in a can sound, but without the bell like ringing, maybe as if you were shaking the can very quickly while holding all sides of it so it doesn't ring. Could this still be detonation? It lasts only for a brief moment while accelerating very hard.

I am thinking maybe this is a timing issue?

Is this something a dyno tuner should be able to get perfect while tuning the car, or is it possible for a dyno tuner to advance the timing a little too much and need to back it up later on?

Isn't this something I can do myself with the SCT?

By the way, I also heard this sound back when I had a Brenspeed tune. I thought I was just running lean and the dyno tune should fix it, but I am still getting the sound. Any help is appreciated, it has me a little worried.
Could also be contaminated gas. Try a different gas station and be sure to use the right octane for teh tune.

seafoam is pretty harsh. You can give Techron a try. but at this point, i highly doubt its engine's internals or gas quality from what thread starter has been saying. It could be something moving or scraping against something that only happens under WOT. (engine moves the most)

Default RE: Pinging after dyno tune?

This sound has occured with numerous different tanks of gas from different gas stations, so I don't think that is it.

Someone on another forum mentioned they had a pinging problem as well and that a bottle of Seafoam got rid of it (after 200 miles). Might be worth a try.

Grampa_Stang - Ihad not realized others were getting a scraping sound due to the spacer! I will look into this, a scraping, velcro kind of sound is the best I can describe it. Anyone have any more details on this?
