very random but good trick

RE: very random but good trick
It's all relative to where you want to be in the RPMs when you hit the next gear... for putting around town, up shifting at 2k is fine.. in fact, if you go by the recommended shift points in the owners manual you're pretty much driving like that.

when im coming to a stoplight, usually i pop it into neutral and coast to the stop sign....only downshift on approach to a freeway standstill.....and my car jumps when i switch gears too...i thought it was just my driving...nice to know im not the only one...i thought i just needed to get used to my car!

I usally shift in the 3-3500 range if I'm not in too bad of traffic but if there is a lot of traffic around i will shift at more like 2000. Also when I'm in traffic I can't resist downshifting coming up to redlights so I can hear my flowmaster a/t's make a little more noise.

By much trial and error I have come to find that shifting is optimal on our stangs somewhere between 2500-2900 rpm.
I used to shift at 2,000 but when i'd change gears the difference of rotational speed of the engine and tranny was very high, and thus, the two-piece driveshaft klunked and You could feel the shock.
I personally think 3000 or higher is wayyy to high unless you need the performance, and afterall, you are just ruining gas mileage.
Lets remember that our stangs have like no horsepower down low and are very heavy, so do not try to shift at like 1,800 rpm unless its downhill.
My lord, we make our 300 at 5800? rpm.
Cruise at like 1500-2000 and your fine. Shift around 2500 and you'll be fine.

Thanks for the replys guys. Guess I will start shifting at like 3k to see how that helps. Ok just went for a drive and shifted at 3k, it felt alot better, not jerky like before, and I took my foot off the gas when I shifted. Maybe that was my problem before giving it too much gas at every shift. But thanks again

While I'm not expert at stick shift, I thought I just wasn't hitting it right in the car. Last weekend I drove a 74 MGB GT and hit just about every shift fine. Makes me think it's the 2 piece shaft.
