So I am about to buy a 2008 GT

Not sure I agree with the "more fun" folks. Maybe more fun in the eye of the beholder. All you are going to get here is votes for whatever the person bought themselves... so buy what you feel you can live with. I've had a host of manual sports cars and muscle cars and they were fun, but these days I find manuals tiresome. The auto in this car is enjoyable IMO and it goes like a bat out of hell with the tune.

Ideally everyone needs one of each. One for fun and street hooligan ****, one for street/strip consistency, not to mention holding hands or an order of McD's sundaes while driving (or eating a hamburger and driving, etc lol)

I would have to agree that driving a stick is more fun, but ONLY when you don't have heavy traffic situations. If you live in any really developed area, then stop and go traffic really gets old when driving a manual. I absolutely hated it in Tokyo, and the only reason I put up with it was because I was driving a Skyline!
Here's a practical reason you might want to go with an auto as well. If you can find an '07 you like, they are discounting the A/T off the price, so it's free! Sooooo...no price difference between the A/T and M/T, and the resale value of the A/T is always better. That will help if you trade or sell it once the new Mustangs come out. Just a thought...

+1 on the auto, I've had my fun with the sticks, yeah they're great until you have to drop the tranny toreplace the clutch, pressureplate, throwout bearing, etc..etc,
I'd rather beef up my TQ and pray my syncros survive if I ever get to the heavily modded point, besides at that level I'd probably run a 302 with a C-6 rather than dump a bunch into the 4.6. I'd love to have a good old fashioned carburated 351Cleveland with 4BBL headsin this body style with a rock solid C-6 or C-4 tranny.
all in all the auto will save you some gas, some maintenance, and leg wear. (when your over forty all that counts!)

Hell, I'm only 29, and that stuff matters to me! Plus, once I saw that you could still change the gears out, and do everything else you could on the stick, getting an auto pretty much became a no brainer. I've even located a GT with the comfort group AND crimson interior, so I can feel better about pulling up to the next luxury coupe I see, and asking them if they have any Grey Poupon...[8D]

I vote for stick - I can't stand not having direct control over what gear I'm in..
That said, learning to drive stick is like learning the guitar - EZ to pick up the basics, a lifetime to master. But you'll be doin ok after a month or so..
