Radar detectors can only give u the upper hand when cops are using K/KA based dash mounted radar systems. They have a very short range and radar detectors can pick them up easily. However, most speed trap police officers use laser guns. Radar detectors cannot detect them until the cop fires the laser at you, by then, making it too late. Laser guns have a much longer range than the radars, so cops will use them to "sneak attack" unwarey speeders.

Radar detectors do not always protect you, but can give you some protection, or tell you to get ready to pull over.

Wow, theres like 5 of these threads every week. Lol

Anyways, lets start out by saying, do not buy a Rocky Mountain Radar or Cobra radar detector. They are both about as good as having an empty water bottle up on your dash. Stick with Beltronics, Valentine, and Passport, these are the three biggest brands and all are very good.

I plan on grabbing a Bel 965 on Thursday when I get paid. On the Passport side, a 8500 X50 is the best for the buck, and on Valentine, you best and only option is the V1. The V1 seems to have a more sensitive detector in it, but it falses more than the Bel/Passport.

The biggest mistake people make when they grab a radar detector is that they can't get a speeding ticket no matter what. If you have a good eye, a decent radar detector, and a bunny rabbit( Driver in front on highways) your odds of getting a ticket are very slim. Laser detectors are almost impossible to detect unless your car or your bunny rabbit gets shot. There is a little can of stuff called Veil Side, and ir is very effective(and legal) way of making the radar way less of a threat. When a cop shoots someone with a laser, he aims it at either a headlight, grill, or lisence plate. Keep that in mind if you get a can of veil side.

Most Radar Jamming is a complete hoax. There are two different types, Active and Passive. Passive is the cheapest and the worst. Mostly because it does NOT work at all, don't be brought in with the gimmicks of jamming those pesky lasers because it is always a joke. Active is the other kind, and it works to a point. It is very expensive and is a federal felony to posess.

Another thing before I end this badly written post is if you live in Washington D.C. or Virginia you don't need to pony of the extra cash for the STi driver. The Beltronics 995 and 965 are all comparable to the STi performance wise, they just aren't immune to the Spectre 3/4. Radar/Laser detectors are illegal in those two spots and that is where the cops use 99.99% of the Radar detector detectors, if you live anywhere else in the U.S. you don't have to worry about being hidden from the Spectre RDD's.

It really depends on what the cops use on the streets you travel most. Radar etectors are fairly helpless against point and shoot laser guns. But if you want to battle the cops' laser, you can always get a laser jammer, which are legal but very, veryexpensive.

I have the Passport 8500, which I only use on roadtrips and a certain empty freeway near me where one can generally drive 120mph+ safely almost any day or night. My detector saved me from at least one ticket on the way to Vegas, so it paid for itself right there.

Someone brought up the issue of whether radar detectors are legal. The are only banned in Virginia and D.C.

around where i live the big thing for cops is speed traps and they are impossible to avoid.... they have to points with a timer that times you from point to point and if you are speeding, a cop is waitin a half mile down the road to pick u up...

Escort Passport 8500 here (hardwired).

It hassaved me several times but I did get tagged once with laser. That time it was more my fault than the detector because I was in an area where I know the WA cops hang out on I5...but I wasn't paying attention.

Some kid in an older Celica had just passed me on the right side at 100+ and I was saying to my g/f, " Look at that idiot...," when BANG the laser warning goes off.

Unfortunately at the time I was in the middle lane cruising along at 85 in a 70.

I still don't know why that punk wasn't tagged....

On the other hand, another time I was on a 3 lane highway coming up ontwo slower cars sittingin the middle and left lanes respectively. No other cars close by so I drifted over to the right lane at 80-ish (60 mph limit). The detector kicks in so I slow down. Ahead I see a motorcycle cop standing in the median. I'm thinking I'm busted but instead he waves over the mini-van in the left lane that I was in the process of passing.

He's probably still wondering why the a-hole in the Mustang wasn't pulled over.

Just wondering who has a radar detector on their car? Do they work every time, or have you still got a speeding ticket?

what brand works the best?
I have one, i was speeding and itsounded off when a cop radared me.....end result................$562 speeding ticket...not really sure whats the point of them, i guess there main purpose is too prevent you from doing something if a cop is around, but if your allready wrong doing then your gonna get caught anyway...

Default V1

I have a valentine 1. Nope never gotten a speeding ticket *knocks on wood* but it was interesting when I got pulled over by a state trooper for no front plate and dark tint and he looked in and saw the valentine and was like does that thing really work? I told him it has kept me honest and out of trouble... He just chuckled and told me to be safe.

But back to your question. It is one of the best investments iv made. I still drive conservatively because I would rather be safe than sorry but it has prevented me from getting nailed on numerous occasions

I don't rely on it to not get me a ticket. If it goes off and there is a cop around I know to not do something stupid.

Yes, it all depends on what the officers are using. "Laser dectors"...hmm?
