Default What doe's the 3rd valve do?

Know this may sound stupid, but I'm curious as to what the 3rd valve doe's in a S197.

1 valve - Air induction
2 valve - Exhaust
3 valve - ??? (Flux Capacitor?)

Thanks for the clarification.

+1 on hammeron,
The real question is how does the 3rd valve help us? I know our heads flow almost as well as the dohc 4.6. Is this just because of the 3rd valve and the vct?

The 3 valve design is a compromise. Normally GTs had a 2 valve design while Cobras, etc had a 4 valve design. Through extensive testing I think they developed the 3 valve. More power than the 2 valve and flows almost as well as the 4 valve. Coupled with VVT and presto, 300HP. But who knows.

its got more low-end torque than the 4 valve, but is more cost-effective. 2 intake 1 exhaust.

The smaller intake valves encourage higher low end port velocity of the intake charge, which helps produce more torque. So two small valves that flow as well as a single larger valve will make more torque. Exhaust side, it's all about just getting a mass of burnt gas out of the cylinder, so really, there is alot less benefit to a second exhaust valve, unless it just allows you to flow more air.

2 intake valves allows for variable timing, aka strong and flat torque curve over a longer range of rpms.
