What doe's the 3rd valve do?
Know this may sound stupid, but I'm curious as to what the 3rd valve doe's in a S197.
1 valve - Air induction
2 valve - Exhaust
3 valve - ??? (Flux Capacitor?)
Thanks for the clarification.

The 3 valve design is a compromise. Normally GTs had a 2 valve design while Cobras, etc had a 4 valve design. Through extensive testing I think they developed the 3 valve. More power than the 2 valve and flows almost as well as the 4 valve. Coupled with VVT and presto, 300HP. But who knows.

The smaller intake valves encourage higher low end port velocity of the intake charge, which helps produce more torque. So two small valves that flow as well as a single larger valve will make more torque. Exhaust side, it's all about just getting a mass of burnt gas out of the cylinder, so really, there is alot less benefit to a second exhaust valve, unless it just allows you to flow more air.
