Pinging?
Alright! Pretty frustrating. Brenspeed sent me an 87 octane tune, toned down to less than stock timing to see if indeed my engine is pinging. Well, the sound I've described is still there, and present at 2750 RPMs (narrowed it down.) Infact if I feather the gas on that RPM it stays for a little longer, but any lower, or any over and it goes silent. (Not sure if it's that RPM exactly, judging from the needle I'd say it's there or somewhere close by.)
So, the question is... what could it be? My dealer is claiming it is preignition, Brenspeed is obviously sure it isn't.

Brenspeed is telling the truth - it is NOT 'pinging'
I'm telling you it's a harmonic rattle of something. Harmonic rattle = part rattling at certain frequency or vibration (as such caused by a specific rpm range) For starters, try to narrow down where you think the sound is coming from and check over nut and bolt in that area and if that doesn't work then take it to a good shop (not a dealer) and upon driving it and hearing it, they should be able to narrow down where it's occuring pretty quickly...
In the meantime, you're not hurting anything.

I have something which sounds very similar, noticeable with the Brenspeed tune also, but I'm pretty sure it's not pinging. I had pinging with a Bama tune and it was very different: higher pitch, and noticeable especially with the windows open, while pushing it at high RPMs. In the case of that rattle with the Brenspeed tune, it seems that the volume/frequency of a component of the exhaust changes and causes something to start rattling/vibrating at that RPM range around the dash area. I'm not worried about it since I don't even notice it with the window down or radio on.
ORIGINAL: Menace
It doesn't/won't make the sound while simply revving it. It only makes the sound while in motion and accelerating... This is why I'm so confused.

Typically, pinging occures when the engine is under a load. Like going up a steep hill and you stomp it.
my car does what sounds like that exact same thing. I notice the noise between 2500 clear to 3300 RPM's. It is not as bad in the morning, If I'm full throttle its hardly noticable, and if I accelarate slowly It is not noticable. .However under normal accel it is obvious and annoying. Also it is not ever noticable in first gear, and rarely in fifth.
I have had the exhaust checked, and I have taken away timing, and even added timing. exhaust was fine and messing with the timing made no noticable difference. I have also checked every bolt under the hood that I can see, and even put some dynamat on the firewall, still nothing I have done has changed this noise.
I had the car dynoed to see if I was losing power and I was right in line, I don't know were to go from here?[sm=dontgetit.gif]

If it's not hurting the engine, I can live with it... but it's got me real worried that it's something damaging the engine and I really don't want to have to replace or repair this engine prematurely..
I have a 'pinging' type noise and I feel it is just the 3 valve sound. But it seems to come from the pipes not the engine. I flashed the 87 tune and adjusted my timing to max retard and the sound was still the same. In my feeble mind I ruled out preignition. So I just put back in the 93 tune, advanced the timing a little and hammer the shisnit out of it.It's fun!
I had the same problem with my 06 GT and took it to my dealer. I also thought it was a heat shield. They took it for a road test and confirmed the noise. Then they tightened the exhaust hangers. I took it home that night and it was still making the noise. So, I took it back and went on a road test with the guy myself and showed it to him again. They took it in the shop and revved the engine hard several times and got it to make the noise sitting still. After about an hour or so the service manager came and got me and told me it had to do with some gap or somthing with the bolts for the inspection cover on the bell housing and that initially with the new body style mustangs(05+) Ford left out a couple bolts on the bottom (the only two that are visible), but mine were all there and they put some RTV around the bolts. THAT SOLVED THE PROBLEM, at least in my case. So I would go back to the dealer and ask them to check out the bolts around the bell housing. See if that takes care of the problem. I think it should. It sounds like the exact same problem I was having. Good luck to all of you and hopefully this helps. I know it sounds a little weird, but that is what happened to mine. Even if you don't have it fixed, it is not something that is going to be a problem, at least that is how it was told to me. Good luck again.
