Spark Plugs! Aggggh!

RE: Spark Plugs! Aggggh!
Good info for anyone going to change their plugs. YOU MUST COAT THE ENTIRE SMOOTH AND TAPERED PART OF THE PLUG WITH ANTI SEIZE when you reinstall! Those that say carbon won't work its wayup there and seal the plug (esp in F/I engines) don't know WTF they're talking about. There have been more broken plugs on these engines than any other I've heard of. I think hammeron or howarmat has a good illustration of where the antiseize should go. Just don't be skimpy with it!

RE: Spark Plugs! Aggggh!
doc, i may have overdone it just a tad last month,
when i pulled mine to a) check 'em & b) to
reapplyanti-seize
i used nickel in the red area and copper
in the blue area (cause it was already
there from my original install)
if i had any brains, i would have simply used
nickel everywhere, right from the start

Hammy,
Only use the nickel in the red area. You need to NOT use the anti seize on the threads so the penetrating fluid can wick past them and coat the sleeve. I'd take em back out and clean off them threads.

RE: Spark Plugs! Aggggh!
yeah, once you use anti-seize on the plug
threads, the plug hole gets coated.....i choose
to go anti-seize (no choice now really) from
this point on....
someone who's never pulled them, has the choice
to do it right (Fords way), or hammers way []
use your own good judgement

The 5.4 in my F-150 has the same problem. Here's a link to the tsb procedure to remove. Should be the same for our 4.6's. I haven't yet tried to remove the plugs from my truck but I'm damn sure getting the removal tool. Cheap insurance. If I can use on both engines if needed even better.

RE: Spark Plugs! Aggggh!
Hey everyone, I haven't been able to get to computers very often since my laptop crapped out, so here's a status update...
I bought 2 new plugs, one to replace the broken one and one just for a spare, and after I read the cylinder 6 misfire code I replaced that plug with the other new one. That cured the problem, but the next day I got a cylinder 7 misfire. I wondered if just removing the coil and reseating it would do the trick, so I did that and still no dice. I drove down to Advance (really slowly) and ordered 6 more plugs. They're supposed to come in this morning, so I'll run down this afternoon and pick them up. Hopefully I can get her running smoothly after this. I can only imagine that I semi-broke some of the other plugs when I was pulling them out, which is why they're intermittently crapping out now.
I am sure nothing fell down in the cylinder. I've done some engine rebuilds before, but I was not about to remove the head!
Out of curiosity, why do the auto stores not have our plugs in stock? You'd think with all the 5.4L trucks running around there would be a decent demand for them.
Again, for everyone that hasn't done this yet, do it ASAP!
