Default 87 Tune

I'm about to place an order for the C & L intake and X-Cal 2 Tuner. My question is how much of an improvement is the 87 tune over stock. I want to run the 87 gas through first before stepping up to a higher octane tune.

depends, if its just the tune provided by Xcal... then you will notice a difference because of the intake... the tune sets the ecu up for the new intake. if you order a custom tune (bama, brenspeed), hold on because your going for one hell of a ride...

Yeah, I should have said I'm ordering from Brenspeed with their custom tune.

The different octane levels do not make that much of a difference in comparison to the difference between the custom and stock tune. I would still go for a higher octane tune, but to each his own. You'll gain maybe 3-5hp going from 87-91 octane. Someone correct me on that if I'm wrong.

I'm also getting the 89 and 91 tunes as well, just wanted to see how much difference the 87 would be until I use that gas and refill with higher octane.

Gotcha.

It's always a good thing to have a 87 octane tune anyway, in case you travel and can't find 91/93 octane anywhere.

I asked Doug about the difference in hp between the different octanes. He said there is about 3-5 HP difference between each octane.

well one of the main reasons i started running 93 is partially because i get much better milage on 93 than 87. i have an 87 tune, but damn, doug's 93 race just gets to me every time...

No, you're not wrong. Brenspeed tech support told me before I bought my combo that there's a bigger difference between stock 87 and custom 87 than there is between custom 87 and custom 93. Although I've never actually ran my 87 custom tune and only compared my 89 tune to my 93 tune, I believe it.
