Default MPG Drop

I have been averaging around 23mpg and now I average betwenn 21.5-22mpg. About a month ago I had a tire blowout and I also switched to full synthetic mobile 1 around the same time. Those are the only things I have changed and it started going down since then. I didnt think so but would those have anything to do with my mpg? Any other ideas? Thanks

Did you use the same weight in motor oil? A heavier weighted oil could possibly decrease your fuel economy. Also make sure all your tires are inflated either to recommended 32 psi or higher (38-40psi) that way you will increase the fuel economy slightly. The only problem is that you will have less traction with them overinflated.

I know it's kind of an odd thought, but my mileage has gone down a bit since the kids went back to school... more traffic on the roads during my morning commute means I can't use cruise and have a bit more stop and go. Any chance that's happened with you?

Virtually all gasoline retailers, including the major brands, have added 10% ethanol to their products. That is the most likely reason for the mpg drops many are seeing because ethanol is much less efficient that 100% dino fuel.

Thanks to all the 'tree huggers' and Al Gore types for giving us the the 'miracle' of ethanol which has lowered our mpg's and raised the price of food.

If your tire blew out, you should look into getting a new one to replace it. Flat/blown out tires are a number 1 leading cause of lower mpg.

j/k of course lol

How many data points have you accumulated over the month? There are many, many variables in day-to-day driving that can impact mileage. A 1 -1.5 drop could be anything from heavier traffic to a heavier foot, different fuel, etc.. I'd watch it and see how it looks after about 8 or 10 data points.

I run 5w20 right now, I replaced the 2 back tires with take off pirellis and I try to stay as close to normal driving as possible. I'm not going heavy on the pedal. I need to check the tires and as far as the a/c I keep the windows down under 45mph and use light a/c above that with the windows up. Thanks everyone

I try and shift at around 2500-2600RPM and stay in 4th gear when I'm cruising around 40. Obviously avoiding WOT starts helps to. But what fun is that? lol

Oh and ethanol hasn't driven up the price of food.

If you are worried about 1-2.5 MPG decrease if fuel economy and are babying it so much that you only run a/c above 40, etc.... perhaps a Ford Focus is the car for you.
