Default Code 0340 (Rebuild optional ?)

Hey guy's
I just joined the pos alternator group. Two test confirmed low voltage/bad diode.
I've done the search and know everyone is having to buy the $400 07' alternator, but I'm wondering if it's possible to have the factory alternator rebuilt and/or have a new diode put in?

Thanks

That's exactly what I did and it only cost $200 for parts and labor with a 1 year warranty. I did have to sit around a few hours while they rebuilt the alternator. It also fixed my battery problems of the last year or so. I think that a lot of the so called battery problems people have been having are actually alternators that are "soft" failing. This is a VERY common problem with the 3-valve engines in Mustangs and Ford trucks.

HTH!

I have an '07 and mine went out at around 28,000 miles. Replaced under warranty.... and without any scratches to my hood.

Thanks F1FAN
This sure beats paying $405 ! Going this Friday to have it rebuilt. Did you have a local repair shop do the work?

Grampa_Stang ....
Your's went out ! I thought the fix for the 05-06 stangs WAS the 07 Alternator !!!
Do you know if the cause was the diode or not ?

rford426....
Have you spun her to 6k yet ? lol....really ! I heard thats the main reason for the failure, something about the high rev's damaging the diode in the regulator.

Alright I'm good to go now !

My local shop rebuilt it for $80. He showed me the part he replaced, the plate which holds the diodes. The new one has a noticeable difference in size....connections/solders/etc.

He believes the main reason for the issue is the clutch pulley on our alternators(Which I didn't know we had). He said the sudden off & on cycles can pop the diodes.

But anyway...I'm back on the road, thanks for the help.

These alternators are pieces of crap. I had one replaced in May of this year and my engine light came on this morning. The dreaded p0340. I'm at 37,000 miles now. Alt was replaced at 28,000 so I still have 3k miles before the warranty is up on the replacement.

These alts truly suck.

what are the characteristics of a bad alternator in these cars? Just rough running or what?
