Blown Fuse to Main PCM

Blown Fuse to Main PCM
Hi All: I have a 2005 GT with no performance mods (other than Corsa exhausts which really don't count). The car has 71k. It just needed (so they said) new ring and pinion gears and a throttle body (a different story). On Friday night it stopped running on the interstate. It just died without warning. The dealer told me a few minutes ago that I have a blown fuse to the main PCM. They say the "engineers" at "Ford" told them the fix was to put a fuse on each of the three wires going to the PCM to the tune of about $500. Anybody ever heard of this issue in an 05? It is my daily driver and I do not run it hard. This is an awful lot of trouble all of sudden for a car without a lot miles. I am suspicious. Thanks for the feedback.

I haven't heard about that problem specifically regarding what you describe. When they told you it would be $500, is that going to be covered under Warranty? Hoping you do have an extended warranty because that price seems awful steep for 3 fuses.

You are getting reamed.
Go to another stealership or
replace the fuse yourself.
Three fuses is not any better than one fuse
if there is a fuse popping short.....
Never heard of what they are telling you.
NEVER.
Have them show you the TSB on your problem
and the associated $500 '3 fuse fix'...

It gets better. Ford customer service says the PCM is covered by an 8 year 80K warranty. But the dealer says that the wires that lead into the PCM, that they admit are improperly designed and would be unneeded if the part under warranty did not exist, are not covered. You only have put this position in writing to realize how insane it sounds. I cannot go to another dealership because the car is dead. [EDIT - Let's be fair. Ford did not take bailout money]. I really used to love this car. Now... we'll see. I'll keep you all posted. Reason may yet prevail. I resume the fight tomorrow.

Update. Ford and the dealership saw reason. While I am still not sure the fix is permanent, they waived all but $30 of the cost. I thought it was important to let folks here know that. We see a lot of legitimate complaining, so we should give Ford and the dealers kudos when they do the right thing. Perhaps there is hope for the American auto industry. Good customer service and fair treatment. What a concept! Are watching and listening Congress?
