Reason No. 95 Why I Don't Go to the Dealer
I'm switching over to an 8-rib pulley system. All is done except the alternator pulley, which requires the special 33 spline removal tool. I figure I could take the alternator out and have the dealer take the 2 minutes to remove the nut, or I could pick up the tool. Well the dealer will not sell the tool, and get this, if I remove the alternator and bring it in they will remove the nut for only $50! $50 to push the trigger on an impact wrench and remove a nut? Anyone else believe this is a little unreasonable?
Maybe it's just me, but I would rather buy the tool for $29 plus spend another $150 - 250 for a pneumatic impact wrench and compressor than give $50 to have a nut loosened.

You might be able to rent the tool at a local auto parts store.
You can electric impact wrenches for much less. It's worth buying tools when you need them. A little here and a little there adds up to a good collection of items that lets you fiux darn near anything.
I have to go to Auto zone today and get the tool to pull a power steering pump pulley. Maybe I will buy it.

I've tried the Zone, the Boys, NAPA, two local auto stores, 2 ford dealers and the VW dealer in my area. No one has the 33 spline tool for sale or rent. I did purchase one on-line for $29 so I'll take the tool and my alt to the Zone and they'll spin it off. I'm all for new tools, but this is likely a one time use deal since the 33 spline nut is replaced. It may come in handy when a new alt is needed however.
BTW, place the PS pulley in boiling water for about 10 minutes prior to installation. It will push on like butter. I spent a little over an hour trying to install mine until I just pulled it all apart again and used the boiling trick.

Most techs get paid by the job, so even though it only takes 2 minutes to do the actual work, the tech is charging to find the car in the parking lot, put it on the hoist if required etc. Some shops have a minimum hoist charge. The service advisor wants to get paid for writing up the work order and doing their part too...I agree it seems a bit ridiculous in this instance but no one wants to work for free...
