Default Whipple snout seal installation

I had been putting it off for awhile but finally had to call Whipple about the oil residue on the supercharger snout.

They gave me two choices: I could give them a deposit and they would send a new snout then refund the deposit when the old one was returned to them or they would send me a new seal and supercharger oil.

I chose to replace the seal myself. I have to add that my Whipple is well past warranty and this is just another example of great customer service.

The bolt that attaches the snout hub to the driveshaft is loctited. The directions say to use a spanner wrench. I couldn't locate one and ended up using a large pulley, wrapping the belt tight and applying additional force to the belt by hand to get enough grip to break the bolt loose.

Unfortunately the bolt threads had enough loctite on them that I couldn't remove the bolt from the drive shaft (the hub and drive shaft are friction fit and all the bolt threads are in the shaft). When I tried to loosen the bolt more it still had enough grip to turn the impellers. This meant I had to remove all of the midplate to engine manifold bolts, drain the oil, and prop the supercharger up enough that the snout would clear the water crossover.

In order to get the bolt out I had hold the shaft with a large screwdriver between the coupler dowels.

Once the bolt was removed I was able to pull the hub and gain access to the snapring and seal.

Here's the cause of all this work, one leaking seal.

Seal pulled. The outside of the seal mating surface had to be oil free to ensure a good friction fit.

Seal replaced. Ready to bolt the hub back on.

RTV applied to mating surface.

Other mating surface cleaned and ready to go.

Squeeze out indicates a good fay seal.

Almost forgot to fill it back up with oil.

i'm definitely bookmarking this for future
reference. as you know i replaced my snout
recently and i now have the new design with
the c-clip. if mine starts to leak down the road,
i think i'll do what you did. maybe this is just
something we'll all have to do every few years.

If I have to do this again I'll rtv the outside of the seal during install. The seal went in a little too easy imo compared to others I've done.

Bruce,

Why did you have to do this? My whipple is leaking supercharger oil somewhere but i think its from where the whipple bolts up to the intake manifold. i have to add more oil like every 2 months.... :/ was this the issue you were having? Or is it visably coming from the snout?

I first noticed it on the front drivers side injector. Just a light film. Finally traced it back to the snout. Run your finger under the snout.

My snout also leaked, and my oil turned black, and my FPDM #2 connector was broke, but I got the other end of the customer service spectrum...
