Mustang 2010 HID
Hi everyone,
I recently installed a HID conversion kit (35w 6000k) on my 2010 Mustang. Surprised how much brighter they are when compared with stock halogen...
Question is: Has anyone ever been pulled over because of HID conversion kits like that?

Sure you could be pulled over. Why do you think people that drive an Audi are "Idiots"? I was seriously looking at a S5 before I got my Mustang. That vehicle came with HID headlights, in the proper housings and properly aligned. What's idiotic is HID bulbs in the wrong housings, improperly aimed up in other drivers eyes. Really getting tired of these blue and purple headlights behind me blasting my mirrors. They sure are bright when they shine in your eyes, but when you get behind them, they actually output less usable light than the halogen bulb they replaced. So if a cop mistakes your low beams for your brights, that would be improper usage of high beams and could definitely result in a traffic stop.

Oh yes the hell you can get pulled over for loud exhaust and HID's. Just depends on how much of an *** the cop is. Especially now since towns and cities need money for budget shortfalls, they are pulling people over for minor stuff. It depend on the ordinances of the area you are in. I know plenty of people who have been pulled for Tint, Lights and Exhaust. They just want to the $100 fine and $100 dollar court cost. So anyone who says you can't be pulled over is a huge moron.

You can get pulled over for whatever they want to pull you over for.
Not dimming your headlight to oncomming traffic is one of them....
They have the power and you cant be 100% sure that they cant/wont
pull you over ever....

Better go back to the halogen then...
Funny thing is that when I bought my 2010 Mustang I asked the sales person if I could buy and install the OEM HID headlights. I was surprised to hear from him that "if it doesn't come from factory, it can not be installed" (according to him, it has something to do with the wiring...??
However, the same local Ford dealer will install HID conversion kit if we order (they don't really install but take to another place). But you can actually do it through the dealer...
Saleen made HID for the 2005-2009. Does anyone know if they also make for the 2010?

I'm pretty sure you can get HID retrofit kits for a Toyota Tercel if you want to spend the money--doesn't mean it will work right. As previously mentioned, HID's aimed too high can be mistaken for high beams improperly used, which can definitely get you pulled over. Almost all cars with factory HID systems have auto-leveling headlamp housings. For example, the IS300 I had flicked its headlights up an down a few degrees each time it started up. Once the car figured out what "level" was, it would hold the lights at that angle. This prevented the bulbs from aiming up at someone's eyes on the road. No simple bulb replacement retrofit kit is going to have this feature. It's the reason HID usually cost $500-1000 from the factory. Bulbs plus expensive housings=$$$.

Since I can't seem to edit my own post?? I'll just add this: If you are having the HID kit added by a dealership or reputable aftermarket company, it may have the required leveling system. Above I was referring more to the $199 Ebay kits that are so popular. Did they mention modifying/replacing your housings when you had the work done?

60Bubba,
thanks for the info.
No, they did not make any changes to headlights. The only thing they did was install the kit with ballasts, bulbs, etc...
I aimed the headlights a little lower (did it myself...) but still think it is too bright...
